Strong Winds, Dust Expected Across Several Regions in Morocco on Monday
Rabat – Morocco’s General Directorate of Meteorology has issued an orange-level weather alert, warning of strong winds and dust storms expected on Monday in several parts of the country.
According to the alert, wind gusts ranging between 80 and 100 km/h are expected to hit several provinces, including Azilal, Chichaoua, Al Haouz, Marrakech, Essaouira, Inzegane-Ait Melloul, Chtouka Ait Baha, Tiznit, Taroudant, Agadir Ida-Ou Tanane, Sidi Ifni, and Guelmim.
The weather office forecasts these conditions to last from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 p.m.
Authorities warned that the strong winds may be accompanied by dust, which could reduce visibility and affect travel conditions, especially in open and rural areas.
This sudden change in weather comes after several weeks of stable and sunny conditions across much of Morocco. This offered a break from what had been an intense winter season.
Earlier this year, the country experienced unusually heavy rainfall that broke records in several regions. The rains caused flooding in many areas, in addition to material and human losses. This was especially the case in northern Morocco, with the city of Ksar El Kebir the most affected.
Still, the heavy rain brought much-needed relief by filling dams and improving water reserves.
The heavy rainfall helped end consecutive years of drought, marking an important shift in Morocco’s water situation.
