Joe Sargent / Getty Images Share article1PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers have placed the unrestricted free agent tender on Aaron Rodgers, a league source confirmed to The Athletic. The seldom-used move sets certain parameters for a possible contract, gives Pittsburgh potential draft-pick compensation if Rodgers were to sign elsewhere and (longer term) could establish a deadline. The move protects Pittsburgh in a variety of ways and could apply a small amount of pressure on Rodgers. The Steelers have remained confident throughout this process that the 42-year-old quarterback will play for Pittsburgh next year. Now, should Rodgers choose to sign elsewhere, the Steelers would also be entitled to draft-pick compensation. Based on the compensatory pick formula, that would likely be a fourth-round pick in the 2027 NFL Draft. (Free agents who sign elsewhere automatically count into a team’s comp pick formula if they sign before the draft. The Steelers placed this tender on Rodgers ahead of Monday’s deadline in order to preserve the right to receive a compensatory pick). In terms of compensation, the tender establishes that Rodgers will receive a 10 percent raise from his 2025 salary, which would be about $15 million. The 42-year-old quarterback is still free to negotiate with other clubs and sign with them at any time before training camp. He can also negotiate a bump in salary from the Steelers. Finally, the tender sets one hard deadline for the quarterback. Once training camp begins, Rodgers is only permitted to play for the Steelers. (Again, before that point, he can sign anywhere.) Essentially, this move now prohibits a hypothetical scenario in which another team loses its starter to injury and then swoops in to sign Rodgers as the replacement, like the Colts and Philip Rivers last year. Additionally, if Rodgers is unsigned by Week 10, he cannot play anywhere in 2026. Steelers general manager Omar Khan insisted at the NFL Scouting combine that he didn’t “foresee this going like it did last year,” when Rodgers waited until mandatory minicamp in June to make his decision public. However, the indecision has again lingered longer than many imagined. (Because Rodgers played the 2024 season with the New York Jets, the unrestricted free agent tender was not a tool the Steelers could use last offseason.) Initially, key decision makers in the Steelers organization believed that Rodgers would sign around free agency. When that target came and went without an answer, team president and owner Art Rooney II said the hope was that Rodgers would give his answer before the NFL Draft. With that event wrapping up, the goalposts are moving again. While there is no hard deadline, the new target is OTAs, which begin May 18. (Mandatory minicamp is from June 2-4.) While the Steelers didn’t get their answer from Rodgers before the draft as they hoped, they did add to their quarterback room when they selected Penn State’s Drew Allar in the third round. He joins a group that also includes veteran backup Mason Rudolph and 2025 sixth-round pick Will Howard. New coach Mike McCarthy said throughout the pre-draft process that the Steelers hoped to bring in another young quarterback in the middle rounds as a developmental piece. He said the move had nothing to do with Rodgers. “No, not at all,” McCarthy said Saturday. “This is about developing the room and trying to make the room as deep as we possibly can.” Time will tell if that room eventually includes Rodgers.
