What do you get when you put a bunch of drag queens on a runaway train? A contender for the best movie of the year.
Who cares if Matt Damon is being touted for an Oscar for his heartwrenching turn as Odysseus, or that Tom Holland is webslinging his way to the top of the box office or that Zendaya is ticking off her movie bucket list one highly acclaimed project at a time?
All of this pales in comparison to… drum roll please…. Stop! That! Train! in which RuPaul is the President of the USA, Judy Gagwell (perhaps most concerning is that if Trump said half of what the drag icon declares in this movie, I wouldn’t even bat an eyelid).
Seriously, would anyone question it if the current US President told the world: ‘There’s a saying in politics, the only thing worse than a train crash is a flattened exploded toddler.’
I’ll let you watch the movie to figure out the context for that.
But hang on, I’m getting ahead of myself.
In an ever-divided society, the globe has been crying out for a spoof disaster movie to reflect the ludicrousness of our times or, you know, so you can show up to a cinema screening day drunk and have an absolute riot.
It has tough company to live up to, whether we’re talking about 1980 parody Airplane!, which has transcended eras by becoming a regular viral sensation or Scary Movie, which is more of a horror parody but there are still ‘deadly’ stakes so the point stands.
Stop! That! Train! stands on the shoulders of giants, and I was on a mission to find out if it is worth spending 90 minutes of your time glued to the big screen for.
So there I was at 10am, bright-eyed and buzzing with caffeine to witness this purported masterpiece for myself.
After a lengthy train-themed opening that features perhaps one train too many (let’s wrap it up guys), we meet lowly Stank Train workers DeeDee (Jujubee) and Tess (Ginger Minj) who are lamenting their recent redundancy.
But they’re in luck because a last-minute snafu means high-end luxury trainline, the Glamazonian Express, needs two replacements and soon enough they are shoved into their uniforms and on board.

Once there, they encounter their train school enemy Amber (Brook Lynn Hytes) and her posse (Marcia Marcia Marcia and Symone), who rule first class, while the others are left to serve the poor sods stuck in economy.
Everything is soon thrown into chaos, however, when the train loses its brakes and is on a one-way track straight into the heart of a stormaganza.
Everyone is gagged and gooped as they scrambled to save the day with as much innuendo packed in there as possible in classic Drag Race style.
RuPaul put in an admirable effort as a US President wracked with train PTSD but, once more, the movie begged the question: how do you outparody an administration that is already a parody of itself?
Meanwhile, guest stars Jesse Tyler Ferguson (an uptight businessman uninterested in the beauty of childbirth), Sarah Michelle Gellar (a washed-out actress who no one actually knows) and Missi Pyle (a drunkard desperate for a bang) – all put in an A-star effort.
I’ll be honest, by the time I hit the 45-minute mark, I was checking my watch to see how long we had to go. There’s only so long you can stretch out Judy Gagwell’s train PTSD reveal and DeeDee and Tess’ journey of self-empowerment.
Verdict
It may not quite justify a feature-length movie, but you’re guaranteed to have a hoot – whether you want to or not.
In another universe, this could have been a snappy one-episode special.
Not all the jokes landed, while others were repeated one too many times to make a lasting impression. But I’m not here to read Stop! That! Train! to filth.
If you’re looking for a movie where a bunch of drag queens try and almost fail to stop that train, then you’ve hit the jackpot. Will it stand the test of time? Who knows, but who cares…
Condragulations! It’s a hit.
