Shock new favourite in next Premier League manager to leave market

Michael Carrick’s odds to be the next Premier League manager to leave have been slashed and he is now the favourite in that market.

Manchester United had an extremely disappointing start to the Premier League season on Saturday, losing 2-0 at newly-promoted Hull City.

Tigers boss Sergej Jakirovic had been favourite to be the next top flight manager out of the door, but Carrick now holds that unwanted title.

The former England midfielder was 33/1 to be the next Premier League manager to leave their post before the weekend, but has been cut to just 6/1.

With Eddie Howe leaving Newcastle at the end of July, the next manager to go would go down as the second of the current season, despite it only starting on Friday.

Betfair spokesperson Sam Rosbottom said: ‘Michael Carrick has now become the new frontrunner to be the second Premier League manager to leave their role during the 2026/27 season with the Man United boss’ odds having been slashed into 6/1 from 33/1 to go following the Red Devils’ shock defeat to newly-promoted Hull City on the opening day. Sergej Jakirovic follows alongside Frank Lampard, who are both second favourites at 7/1.

‘Elsewhere, Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi is now 17/2 to go next, having been 16/1 prior to his team’s defeat to Brentford, meanwhile Unai Emery’s odds have shortened to 12/1 from 50/1 last week as the Europa League holders were thrashed 4-0 by Brighton on Sunday.

‘Other contenders to leave their role next include Matthias Jaissle and Regis Le Bris, who are both 12/1, while Xabi Alonso can be backed at 40/1 ahead of Chelsea’s opener against Fulham on Monday night.’

After the surprise result at Hull, Carrick urged for calm, saying: ‘I’m talking to you quite calmly, but I’m not exactly calm inside and enjoying the day, so there’s a big difference.

‘I played [for United] for a long time. You don’t get to play here for a long time without just going day by day, the results, the ups and downs, but you just carry on as normal.

‘It’s 100% not that, and trust me, it’s not that. It just doesn’t mean that we all have to shout and scream and come out and create some chaos just because of it. Inside we’re hurting and we need to get better. But the calmness doesn’t mean there’s no emotion in it, for sure.’

Howe is out of work after leaving St James’ Park but is the favourite with the bookmakers to be the next Manchester United manager.

The Englishman is ahead of former Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann and current England boss Thomas Tuchel to take charge at Old Trafford after Carrick.

The likes of former United coach Kieran McKenna and ex-England manager Gareth Southgate would also be considered contenders if Carrick were to leave.

The Manchester United hierarchy are not going to make a knee-jerk reaction to the Hull result and Carrick has a good chance to change the narrative very quickly.

Next in line for the Red Devils is a meeting with Ipswich Town at Old Trafford on Sunday.

They will be favourites to win that, but a second loss to a newly-promoted side would represent an absolute nightmare start to the campaign.
