Sheikh Hamdan's playful Dubai World Cup moment goes viral
A clip of Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Minister of Defence and Dubai Crown Prince, sharing a light-hearted moment at the Dubai World Cup has taken social media by storm.
In the video, first posted online by his friend Ahmad Jabar Al Harbi, Sheikh Hamdan can be seen sneaking up behind renowned trainer Simon Crisford as he watches one of the races at Meydan Racecourse.
Simon, who served as Godolphin's racing manager for over 25 years before teaming up with his son Ed to train horses at Gainsborough Stables, appears unaware of the Crown Prince's approach.
Sheikh Hamdan then strikes a pose, mirroring Simon’s stance. When the trainer becomes aware of the camera, he steps back — only to realise Sheikh Hamdan is standing right behind him. He laughs and playfully moves away from the group.
The clip, shot during Saturday's 30th edition of the Dubai World Cup, has since been viewed more than 4 million times across multiple platforms. Social media users have praised the rapport between the UAE's leadership and its people and described it as a heartwarming moment.
The Dubai World Cup brought together some of the world's finest horses competing for a total prize purse of $30.5 million across nine races. Despite ongoing regional tensions, the event went ahead as scheduled, drawing thousands of spectators to Meydan. The iconic 30th edition of the race was made more colorful with Emirati traditional hospitality.
For Simon and Ed, the night was particularly memorable. Their stable's Meydaan, owned by Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, finished third in the prestigious Dubai World Cup race, which was won by American-trained Magnitude.
The Crisfords also celebrated victory in the Dubai Gold Cup, a $1-million race over 3,200 metres, when Fairy Glen, a 5-year-old mare owned by Sheikh Hamdan, took top honours. Ed Crisford later described the performance as "fantastic," noting that the mare had "really blossomed" since her previous run.
The viral moment between Sheikh Hamdan and Crisford added a touch of warmth to a night already filled with triumph for the Gainsborough team.
