Shania Twain reveals how she and new husband 'found each other' through navigating betrayal after their former spouses had an affair together

Published: 00:24, 19 July 2026 | Updated: 00:54, 19 July 2026 It would be fair to say her husband’s infidelity did not impress her much.  But Shania Twain today reveals she was able to cope with the breakdown of her first marriage by falling in love with the man whose wife was having an affair with her husband. The singer said she and Frederic Thiebaud ‘found each other’ as they struggled to come to terms with the betrayal of their partners. Twain, 60, who separated from her record producer husband Robert ‘Mutt’ Lange in 2008 initially refused to believe there had been anything going on between him and her best friend and assistant Marie-Anne Thiebaud. It was Marie-Anne’s husband ‘Fred’ a Swiss-born Nestle executive who helped her face the truth, she tells Desert Island Discs. Ms Twain said: ‘Fred takes the blinders off, tells me what’s going on. I don’t believe him and I tell him that I think he is imagining things, delusional. It turns out it [the affair] was never going to end. So, Fred and I, we collapse and at some point, we just got to let it go.’ She added: ‘And at that time, we found each other and it was really great to say there’s no hope and in knowing that I found out what a beautiful person he was.’ Ms Twain divorced Lange in 2010 and married Thiebaud a year later. The Canadian-born star who dominated the charts in the 1990s with hits such as Man! I Feel Like a Woman and That Don’t Impress Me Much is currently winning over a new generation of fans. She played the legends spot at Glastonbury in 2024 and recently opened for Harry Styles during his 12 dates at Wembley Stadium. The singer separated from the record producer after she discovered he was having an affair with her best friend This new success is doubly sweet because Twain was unable to sing for a decade after she was diagnosed with Lyme disease in 2003. She recalled rediscovering her voice while undergoing an operation on her throat which required her to stay awake.  She said: ‘I have open throat surgery. They open your neck, you’re awake and they put a big clamp in your neck.  'They open it up and they push your larynx to the side, and they look at the nerve, and you phonate again. Sing for me!
