​'Sexually motivated' Greek NHS doctor who smirked as he showed junior colleague explicit video on his phone is suspended for 'abusing his senior position'

Stavros Dimitriadis scrolled through his camera roll at a nurses' station inside University Hospital Coventry (UHC) in front of the woman, lingering on an indecent image and a video of him engaging in a sex act.  The victim, whose identity has not been made known, said the doctor appeared to be smirking and did not seem concerned that she could see what was on the screen during the incident in July 2023. On a separate occasion around two months before, Dr Dimitriadis – who was then a senior clinical fellow in gastroenterology in the hospital – put his arm around the colleague and told her he was 'going to have sex with you before I go back to' either Germany or Greece – she could not remember which. At a tribunal held last month, Dr Dimitriadis protested he had been new to the UK and felt 'socially isolated', arguing that this was the reason he had 'failed to maintain appropriate boundaries'. When questioned about hugging the victim, he said he believed this to be normal behaviour because 'that is how people commonly greet each other in Greece', the tribunal's report said. But the panel said his conduct 'fell well outside the boundaries of acceptable workplace behaviour, regardless of cultural background or unfamiliarity with the UK'. Dr Dimitriadis also told the victim he had slept with every nurse at a previous hospital he had worked at and enjoyed visiting sex museums. A panel found Dr Stavros Dimitriadis, a gastroenterologist who previously worked at University Hospital Coventry, played a video of him engaging in a sex act to a colleague without warning During the tribunal he admitted his behaviour had been sexually motivated and a panel found he had been 'testing the waters' for a potential future sexual relationship with the victim. The junior colleague said the doctor appeared to be friendly and pleasant when he first joined the hospital and added he was flirtatious with everyone. Dr Dimitriadis, who worked at UHC between January 2023 and September 2024, repeatedly subjected the victim to inappropriate behaviour over a period of around 18 months. He told the tribunal he was 'shocked' to learn that his behaviour had caused her to feel fearful, reluctant to come to work and distressed. According to the tribunal's judgment, Dr Dimitriadis said he 'deeply regrets' causing her to feel that way and added it was 'never his intention to cause such distress'. He told the panel he had since taken courses on professional boundaries – which covered sexual misconduct – bullying and harassment and social media. But he claimed he could not remember what had prompted him to show the video and image to his then-colleague, saying they had been discussing different topics and he had begun to scroll on his phone. Chloe Fairley, acting for the General Medical Council (GMC), said Dr Dimitriadis's claim that he could not remember why he had shown the victim explicit material 'raised questions about whether he had fully explored the underlying reasons for that behaviour'. Ms Fairley added the doctor's behaviour had escalated over time, from general comments about his sexual history to his intention to have sex with the victim to the deliberate display of indecent material. Dr Dimitriadis worked at the Warwickshire hospital between January 2023 and September 2024 She also said Dr Dimitriadis had previously tried to 'shift blame' on to the victim by claiming he had been responding to her behaviour. But Ms Fairley acknowledged that he had, more recently, recognised the impact of his behaviour on the victim. Dr Dimitriadis now works at a private gastroenterology clinic in Thessaloniki, Greece. He earned a medicine degree from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 2008 before studying a two-year master's course at Queen Mary University of London, from which he graduated in 2013. He then completed specialist training in Germany, working in the cities of Essen, Magdeburg and Bochum before moving to the UK. A spokesman for University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust said: 'As soon as the Trust was made aware of allegations of inappropriate behaviour of a sexual nature, the individual concerned was immediately suspended and the police notified. 'Prior to completion of the Trust's Maintaining High Professional Standards (the conduct and capability process for medical colleagues) investigation, the doctor's fixed-term employment ended. However, we continued to support the GMC in its investigation. 'The Trust is committed to upholding the highest standards of behaviour and ensuring colleagues feel safe, supported and able to raise concerns.' Dr Dimitriadis was contacted for comment.
