A 35-year-old man who walked into Harrods and took two Prada handbags valued at £23,500 has avoided jail despite it being his 31st theft conviction.

Jon Paul Cathrall, from Liverpool, made his way to the Prada section of the luxury department store while carrying a Harvey Nichols shopping bag, which he used to conceal the stolen items.

The repeat offender was apprehended shortly after the incident and both designer bags were retrieved.

Westminster Magistrates' Court heard Cathrall, who receives benefits and claims depression prevents him from working, was handed a suspended sentence rather than immediate custody.

Footage from the store's security cameras captured Cathrall placing a light-blue crocodile skin handbag into his carrier, before glancing around to check if anyone had witnessed his sneaky behaviour.

Prosecutor Nathan Paine-Davey told the court: "He was then seen on CCTV looking around to see whether anyone noticed what he just did, before picking up a second handbag from the wall display and putting that into his carrier."

Mr Paine-Davey described the theft as appearing "relatively opportunistic", but noted there was clearly some preparation involved.

"The defendant had a carrier bag to conceal the goods, and these were clearly high-value goods, so he had made a decision to steal those rather than the lower-value goods," the prosecutor added.

Cathrall's defence solicitor Yasmin Eshaghian appealed for a community penalty, highlighting her client's most recent offence dated back to 2024, and that he had experienced significant personal difficulties over the past two years.

Ms Eshaghian said: "I would say this was more of an opportunity that arose, rather than something that was planned."

District Judge Daniel Sternberg dismissed this characterisation, observing Cathrall had chosen to use a Harvey Nichols carrier bag rather than "a Tesco bag or a random plastic bag" to hide his crime.

"This clearly wasn't a spur-of-the-moment decision," the judge stated, "I don't think he was just browsing Harrods and suddenly decided to pop a high-value Prada bag into his carrier."

The judge acknowledged Cathrall's sentence must cross the custody threshold, given his extensive record of offences.

However, District Judge Sternberg opted to suspend the punishment, telling the defendant: "I'm satisfied there is a realistic prospect of rehabilitation."

Cathrall received a 12-month prison sentence suspended for 18 months, along with 25 days of rehabilitation and 60 hours of community service.

He was also prohibited from entering Harrods for 18 months.

The luxury department store, which has operated since 1849, stocks exotic skin handbags from prestigious brands that can fetch tens of thousands of pounds.
