'Self-sufficient women need not feel pressured to remarry later in life,' says Asma Abbas

Veteran actor Asma Abbas appeared in an interview alongside her husband Ghulam Abbas, stating that self-sufficient women who had already raised their children shouldn't feel pressured to remarry later in life. She also offered a distinctive view on remarriage for women past the age of 60, emphasising that financial independence was crucial and that staying single past a certain age often allowed women the ability to avoid unnecessary household friction and enjoy a peaceful, independent life. The actor, who married Ghulam Abbas 35 years ago, revealed that maintaining separate routines and personal space, including separate rooms, had strengthened the couple's mutual regard. Abbas, on the other hand, shared how his late first wife navigated his decision to marry Asma, revealing that she moved to the United States to be near her support system and remained upset for around six months. "However, when she decided to return, I welcomed her back without hesitation," he said. He also praised both his first wife and Asma for managing the arrangement with dignity. "Rather than fostering conflict, the two developed a supportive dynamic under one roof," Abbas said. Discussing what helped their marriage last 35 years, Abbas cited the "sincerity of purpose" as the foundation of any lasting bond, noting that "transparency, truthfulness, and allowing one another personal space are essential to avoiding resentment; one shouldn't suffocate the other." The actor's husband also stated that understanding how to navigate a partner’s individuality came with time and maturity. Further, Abbas stressed that honesty remained a non-negotiable in any long-term relationship. He advised younger couples that "the truth is not to be compromised, come what may." He also reflected on his early possessiveness and initial hesitation to let Asma pursue her acting career full-time, admitting that maturity eventually forced him to confront his own flaws. "When I look back, I feel embarrassed. How weak I was. It was a false protection of my so-called male ego," he confessed. "I have changed a lot. Today's Ghulam Abbas is different to the one 35 years ago," the actor's husband said.
