A Ryanair passenger has demanded her money back after being charged £75 for an "oversized" bag she never had an issue with before.

Laura Myers was hit with a £75 oversized baggage charge at Manchester Airport, despite photographic evidence appearing to show her suitcase fitting inside the airline's bag sizer.

Ms Myers posted images on X showing the bag placed within the sizer, with the luggage seemingly meeting the required dimensions.

"Hey @Ryanair, I want a refund for the £75 that the absolute jobsworth at Manchester Airport this afternoon took from me for an 'oversized' bag I've used and never had an issue with on this exact journey maybe 30+ times over the last seven years," she wrote on the social media platform."

Some social media users noted the bag may have exceeded the sizer's markings by a matter of millimetres at the bottom.

When Ms Myers queried a member of staff about whether the bag dimensions had recently changed, she was told they had not, but enforcement had become more rigorous.

Ms Myers believed the staff were pursuing their €2.50 per bag commission over what she described as a difference of mere millimetres.

"In other words, the guy was really chasing his 2.50 per bag commission fee for the sake of millimetres," she said.

Ms Myers has carried the same suitcase on this particular route more than 30 times across the past seven years without ever being penalised.

She described the charge as "a nice little earner of a con" being operated at the gate, vowing to avoid the route entirely in future - even if doing so meant booking two connecting flights instead.

The budget carrier's commission structure for gate staff who identify bags exceeding size limits has been escalating steadily.

Last November, the per-bag bonus paid to employees was increased from €1.50 (£1.30) to €2.50 (£2.16).

Ryanair then announced in May that even larger bonuses would be introduced for staff catching passengers with oversized luggage.

Chief executive Michael O'Leary has indicated the commission could eventually climb as high as €3.50 (£3.03) per bag flagged.

The rising financial incentive for employees to enforce baggage rules strictly has drawn criticism from travellers who believe it encourages overzealous policing of minor size discrepancies.

Other social media users weighed in on Ms Myers' experience with the budget airline.

"How are people defending Ryanair," one user wrote.

Another said: "Flown with Ryanair once, I'd rather walk than have that experience again."

A third commenter suggested Ms Myers was unlikely to receive any response, writing: "You won't get a reply I'm afraid, they're too busy taking the p*** out of people that booked window seats."

The disgruntled passenger clarified in her replies that she had already paid for both a cabin bag and priority boarding.

When other users questioned why she continued to fly with the airline, she explained that Ryanair was the sole carrier operating flights to her destination.
