George Russell set the fastest time in Free Practice 3 ahead of the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, the Mercedes driver leading McLaren's Oscar Piastri and Ferrari's Charles Leclerc. Championship leader Kimi Antonelli was only seventh and eight tenths adrift having struggled with traffic on his final efforts, with the Mercedes driver placed under investigation for erratic driving which will be reviewed post-session. Most drivers and teams were in no rush to head out on the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya immediately, the Cadillacs of Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez the only cars venturing out to perform system checks after breaking the overnight curfew, as did Alpine and McLaren. It took until beyond the 20-minute mark for there to be any meaningful running, with the focus being placed on Qualifying simulations ahead of Saturday afternoon's all-important session. The first representative time was posted by FP2 pacesetter Lando Norris, the McLaren driver setting a 1m 16.609s which left him less than one-tenth clear of Ferrari's Leclerc as both used the Pirelli soft tyre. At the halfway point in the one-hour session, Mercedes finally came to the fore, Russell posting a 1m 16.258s with his first effort which left him 0.242s clear of Antonelli as the championship leader moved into P2. FORMULA 1 MSC CRUISES GRAN PREMIO DE BARCELONA-CATALUNYA 2026 Shortly after the red flag was deployed as Bottas found himself in the gravel on the exit of Turn 10 and unable to extract his Cadillac, reporting "I lost my brake pedal" over the radio having gone into the corner at a reduced speed. The session resumed with just 21 minutes remaining, prompting a flurry of activity when the circuit re-opened as drivers tried to maximise their times with the best of the track evolution. But the hot conditions, with the track temperature reaching 50 degrees Celsius, proved challenging and drivers began to struggle for performance even over just one lap. Russell became the first driver to dip below the 1m 16s barrier, posting a 1m 15.679s which remained the fastest as Piastri fell two tenths short, the McLaren driver heading team mate Norris by less than one-tenth. Antonelli aborted his flying lap having seemingly been impeded by Lance Stroll's Aston Martin through Turn 1, the Italian then backing off on his next effort having been blocked by a Haas at Turn 10, with Antonelli noted for erratic driving for the former incident which will be investigated after the session. Leclerc moved up to third to split the two McLaren drivers, with Ferrari team mate Lewis Hamilton in P5, followed by Max Verstappen's Red Bull and Antonelli. The top 10 was completed by Isack Hadjar's Red Bull, Nico Hulkenberg's Audi and Arvid Lindblad's Racing Bulls. The second Audi of Gabriel Bortoleto was P11, followed by Liam Lawson (Racing Bulls), the two Alpines of Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto, Carlos Sainz (Williams) and the two Haas machines of Esteban Ocon and Ollie Bearman. The order was completed by Alex Albon's Williams, Perez, Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin), Bottas and Stroll.
