Runs in the family: Marcus Spears Jr.'s commitment continues notable recruiting trend for Texas

The Texas Longhorns clearly believe the saying that it runs in the family.  The Longhorns feature junior quarterback Arch Manning, the nephew of Super Bowl champions Peyton and Eli and grandson of former New Orleans Saints QB Archie. His backup, Dia Bell, also comes from an athletic background. The freshman QB is the son of Raja Bell, who played 12 seasons in the NBA, earning a 2006-07 first-team All-Defensive Team nod with the Phoenix Suns.  Now, Texas has landed another top prospect from an athletic family. Except this time, it's in college basketball, not college football.   Spears Jr., the son of former Dallas Cowboys defensive end Marcus (now an ESPN analyst), confirmed he's reclassifying and planning to join Texas for the upcoming season. He must have learned his basketball skills from his mother, Aiysha Spears. She earned one first-team All-SEC nod during her collegiate career with the LSU Tigers, and the Washington Mystics selected her with pick No. 7 in the 2003 WNBA Draft. His sister, 2025 first-team All-SEC honoree Cari Spears, plays outside hitter for the school's volleyball team. Perhaps the siblings can room together. It may be good for Marcus Spears Jr., who will face plenty of pressure during his freshman season as the No. 1 recruit in his class. He's not shying away from those expectations.  "Texas basketball is becoming a big thing again, and I'm excited to be part of it," Marcus Spears Jr. said, via ESPN's Jeff Borzello and Paul Biancardi. "The Texas fans can expect a worker with a lot of energy. I will be trying to bring Texas a national championship." Texas has never won a championship in men's basketball but has come close, reaching the Final Four in 2003. Last season, the Longhorns made the Sweet 16. The Longhorns have won four national titles in football but haven't hoisted the trophy since 2005. Arch Manning's aiming to end that drought this upcoming season.
