Manchester United icon Roy Keane has cautioned the club that Bruno Fernandes could return from the World Cup with his head turned by the prospect of bigger wages. The United skipper was heavily linked with a switch to Saudi Arabia last summer but opted to stay at Old Trafford, despite the club seemingly being willing to let him go. The 31-year-old has just over a year left on his current deal and a £57million release clause . This has meant Fernandes' long-term future has continued to be a subject of debate, despite him turning down a lucrative three-year contract with Al-Hilal nearly 12 months ago . Keane believes Fernandes could face mounting pressure to quit United this summer, when he links up with his international colleagues at the World Cup. The likes of Ruben Neves, Cristiano Ronaldo and Joao Felix are all currently plying their trade in the Saudi Pro League. Fernandes is widely expected to be presented with a fresh contract by the club. However, according to Keane, it won't come without a hefty price tag for United. Speaking on Sky Sports , Keane said: "The problem is, come the summer he'll be going away to the World Cup and he'll be with a lot of his team-mates and they'll be getting into his head because he'll be thinking he's a year older now and he was making a lot of noise last summer, and his agent. You know he plays them games as well. "He's on a decent contract at United but he maybe wanted a bit more and when he's surrounded by them lads who are in Saudi Arabia, they'll be getting to him. But that's the game yeah, I'm not knocking him for that, that's just part of the territory." Presenter David Jones said: "You've got to pay the best." Keane added: "Yeah, but he's on a pretty decent deal at United. "I'm guessing and he's got a year left and he's talking about bringing the best to United so sometimes you've got to focus on the contract you're on and not be getting your head turned like he did last summer. Now that was not all him, that was probably the club as well but stay focused on the contract you're on." FOLLOW OUR MAN UTD FB PAGE! The club's standout performer insists that his deep connection with United means achieving success there would be far more fulfilling than doing so anywhere else. "It's not a question of loyalty," Fernandes explained. "I could have gone two years ago, I could have gone three years ago, I could have gone last season, but I really like to be here. "I think that being successful at this club is something that I can never get at another club. The joy and everything I get, the day I get what I want from this club, I don't think I will get that from any other club in the world ." Fernandes has made no secret of his desire to deliver Premier League glory to Old Trafford. "I know how much the fans want this, I know how passionate they are," he continued. "I know how much they are waiting for the club to come back again. I'm on the same ship as them. I want this ship; instead of being steady, I want it to go forward and to navigate as much as we can. "Yeah, I won the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup [but] what this club wants, what these fans want and what I want, myself and the team, we haven't got that yet. Until my contract expires, I'm going to try." Join our new MAN UTD WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Manchester United content from Mirror Football .
