Interim manager Chad Tracy told reporters in Detroit on Tuesday that outfielder Roman Anthony is day-to-day with a sprained right wrist, but will avoid an injury list stint for now. He’s not expected to play during the remainder of the series in Detroit, but the team believes he’ll only need a few days of rest before returning to the lineup during the team’s upcoming seven-game homestand. Anthony tweaked his wrist on a swing in the first inning of Monday’s 5-4 win over Detroit and exited the game with right wrist discomfort. Anthony had X-rays that were negative, but he flew back to Boston on Tuesday to see the team’s hand specialist for an MRI, which confirmed the sprain but no further structural damage. Anthony, who turns 22 next week, described the injury as pain on the top of his hand. In 30 games this season, he’s hitting .229 with a .675 OPS, five doubles, a triple and a home run. Anthony has split time between DH (13 games) and left field (15 games) with one game in right. On Tuesday, with lefty Framber Valdez on the mound, Tracy had Andruw Monasterio at DH, but Masataka Yoshida will likely see time at DH against right-handers while Anthony is out. Jarren Duran will play left field. Though Anthony might have avoided a more serious injury, the Red Sox have been hit with several injuries of late. Starter Ranger Suarez remains day-to-day after tweaking his hamstring in a start on Sunday and Garrett Crochet is on the injury list with shoulder inflammation, though he threw for the first time on Monday. Reliever Danny Coulombe landed on the IL with back spasms on Monday, but the Red Sox could get reliever Justin Slaten (oblique) back soon as he’s scheduled for a second rehab appearance this week. That’s not counting long-term injuries to first baseman Triston Casas (knee), right-hander Kutter Crawford (knee/wrist), left-hander Patrick Sandoval (Tommy John surgery), right-hander Johan Oviedo (elbow strain) or infielder Romy Gonzalez (shoulder surgery), all of whom are at various stages of their recoveries, but not close to returning. Starter Sonny Gray, who’s been out since April 21 with a hamstring strain, is expected to return from the IL on Wednesday to make the start in the finale against Detroit. Spot the pattern.
