By CAITLIN POWELL - NEWS REPORTER Published: 03:50, 3 June 2026 | Updated: 03:59, 3 June 2026 A rideshare driver has been charged after allegedly crashing a car into a fountain in Sydney's CBD and being found eating the McDonald's delivery in the front seat. Officers were called to Hyde Park at about 3am on Wednesday after reports that a car had reversed into the Archibald Fountain. Police arrived at the scene and found a rental SUV stuck on the edge of the historic landmark, causing up to $20,000 in damage.  A 21-year-old man was allegedly in the driver's seat eating the McDonald's meal he was meant to deliver.  The man, who is a French national in Australia on a working visa, allegedly told officers he was delivering a food order when the incident occurred.  It is alleged that police seized a whipped cream canister from the vehicle. The man reportedly refused to be interviewed by officers at the scene, or give them his driver's licence.  He was taken to St Vincent's Hospital as a precaution for assessment and blood tests after returning a negative alcohol reading at the scene.  A rideshare driver has been charged after crashing into a fountain in Sydney's CBD and police discovered him eating a McDonald's meal in the front seat The driver was later charged with negligent driving, not reversing a vehicle safely, and unlicensed driving. He has been granted conditional bail to appear in Downing Centre Local Court on July 15. The vehicle has since been removed from the fountain, which was built to commemorate ties between Australia and France during the First World War.  NSW Police Inspector Anderson Lessing said officers discovered the car 'half sticking inside, half sticking out' of the fountain. 'I don't know how he's put it in reverse into the fountain, but that's the story he's going with,' he told ABC Sydney radio. He added that it was 'not the run-of-the-mill job' his team were sent to. 'Hopefully, his star on Uber app doesn't go down because of his lack of delivering that Maccas,' he said.  Sorry we are not currently accepting comments on this article.
