Border Force officials have been told by ministers to keep the huge inflatable, made of the same cheap PVC used for a children’s bouncy castle, out of view as public fury erupted over its arrival on Monday. Dramatic photos of the mega-dinghy, released by the French sea rescue services, show migrants on board crushed together like sardines, bare feet suspended over the side, as the inflatable sags under the weight of its human cargo. The 15-metre vessel, longer than a double-decker bus, with enough passengers to fill an airliner, is the biggest ever to reach us during the eight-year Channel migration crisis – and the latest sign that the trafficking gangs have not been ‘smashed’, as Labour promised, but retain the upper hand. In the Government hideaway, the boat will now have had a number painted in white on its side, denoting that it is the 299th traffickers’ vessel to be brought in at the ports of Dover or Ramsgate in Kent since the beginning of this year. The huge inflatable will be measured and forensically examined by Border Force immigration experts to ascertain its origins. Their detective work is expected to find that it came from a factory in eastern China and was made to order for a price of £2,000. People smuggling is a global enterprise, which has ferried more than 200,000 illegal migrants into Britain since the small-boat records began in 2018. Five years ago, the Daily Mail tracked in forensic detail the trafficking gangs’ operations, exposing their ruthless efficiency at running what was described to us as a ‘military campaign’. (Pictured: Migrants swimming in the Channel, attempting to reach the mega-dinghy) Your browser does not support iframes.  We were told by an undercover officer working for the National Crime Agency (NCA) and its European counterparts: ‘The British public think the migrants are buying the odd boat from a French coast hypermarket and launching from the beaches. ‘The reality is that we are fighting international organised crime. The bosses at the top are multilingual, highly intelligent, sophisticated men of all nationalities. They don’t care a jot for the migrants; they only want the money each one brings.’ Another undercover officer, based in the Netherlands, added: ‘The network is so secretive that the junior trafficker pushing the migrant onto the boat, even waving a gun to hurry him along, has no inkling of the name of the next guy up the chain. They all use pseudonyms, right up to the kingpins making millions from a slick, organised crime that financially outstrips drug-running. ‘The Channel traffickers’ business model is run with the efficiency of a winning army. The planning is meticulous. It is a “just in time” operation copied from the car factories. ‘A boat is brought to the beach, then inflated by the gang with an electric pump, just before the migrants arrive at the identical spot to set off.’ Now, the Daily Mail has investigated where the boats come from, who manufactures them and how they get to the beaches in a 6,000-mile journey across continents, seas, border points and some of the harshest terrain in the world. The factories in Weihai and Qingdao port regions of eastern China have become a hotspot for inflatable boat making, ostensibly for leisure use on inland waterways and seashores. Last year, Yamar Outdoors Product Company, which is based in Weihai, was financially sanctioned by the British Government for the suspected sale of ‘immigrant’ boats to Channel trafficking gangs. This week, however, it was reported that the factory’s inflatables are still for sale online and being churned out in any size to order. Our investigation reveals that the boats are often dispatched from these factories using cross-border logistics firms, which run lorries through Asia. The boats are rolled up in a plastic covering and remain uninflated for the 21-day trip by road and ferry. A journey by sea isn’t unheard of – but it takes up to 40 days on a container ship headed to the Malacca Strait and into the Indian Ocean, then north through the Red Sea and Suez Canal and into the Mediterranean. From there, it heads for Georgia, entering Turkey on the Black Sea coast at what is called the Sarp border crossing. Having travelled through Turkey (and this is where the road route joins the maritime route, docking in Istanbul), the dinghy-carrying lorry comes to the Bulgarian border post of Kapitan Andreevo. One of the busiest checkpoints in the world, this is not just the gateway to Bulgaria but the EU’s Schengen Area. Little wonder that it is reportedly infiltrated by organised crime syndicates, which may well be paid by the traffickers to nod the illicit cargo through without any awkward questions. It then heads on to Serbia where the lorry temporarily leaves the EU before re-entering the bloc. Unencumbered by border checks, it is then a straight run through Croatia, Slovenia and Austria, before climbing the Alps and entering Germany at the village of Walserberg, near Salzburg. Seven hours later, the truck arrives in North Rhine-Westphalia, a region named by Britain’s NCA and the pan-continent police force Europol as a key hub for the trafficking operation. There, the gangs hide the boats in industrial warehouses, on small farms or in residential garages until they are called to the beaches on a day when the weather is right for crossings. When the signal comes, traffickers inspect a still-deflated boat before putting it in a small delivery van for its journey to the Channel coastline. The vans are used to avoid the attention of French and Belgian police who presume they are local vehicles. They are often driven by ‘rogue’ foreign couriers, sometimes illegals themselves, who are hired for cash and based in Germany or the Netherlands. Once they complete the drop, they head for home as quickly as they arrive. The people smugglers on the beach usually bury the boat in the sand to await the arrival of migrants, perhaps a day later. But the operations are now so slick that the boat is often inflated immediately as waiting migrants run out of the dunes to carry it themselves to the sea. Those migrants will have come a long way, from the Middle East, sub-Saharan Africa and south Asia. But the boat has been on a longer journey still and is a vital component in the Channel human trafficking trade. So enterprising are the people smugglers that they change tactics to deceive UK and European authorities. Just last month, Border Force seized 25 inflatables and outboards, all Chinese-made and bound for Hamburg, during a raid at the port of Felixstowe in Suffolk. After the monster boat’s arrival on Monday, Labour’s new border security chief Anna Turley said that huge inflatables carrying hundreds ‘must not become the norm’. Yet, the truth is that it’s highly unlikely that the mega-dinghy was a one-off order placed with its Chinese makers. Lying in a German outbuilding today, there may be others just as big – and more on their way.
