Published: 18:21, 11 July 2026 | Updated: 18:21, 11 July 2026 It has to be one of their odder callouts – mountain rescuers were roped in to stretcher a dog off Scotland’s highest peak after it ate a stash of cannabis on the trail. A total of 14 rescuers had to carry a stricken black labrador off Ben Nevis when the drugs left her unable to use her legs. Terrified owner Christina Bluhme from Esher, Surrey, had no idea what was causing pet Tokyo’s health to deteriorate so rapidly on the 4413ft peak. It was only after the pooch was assessed by Crown Vets in Fort William that Ms Bluhme discovered that her dog had likely ingested cannabis. She said: ‘Tokyo quickly lost the use of her legs, drifting in and out of consciousness, and I genuinely thought I was going to lose her.Without the incredible Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team there is simply no way I could have got her safely off the mountain. Carrying a 60lb labrador down Ben Nevis was impossible on my own. ‘Their kindness, professionalism and calm support meant everything during one of the most frightening days I’ve experienced.’ Ms Bluhme said Tokyo was unconscious for much of the journey and most of her time at the veterinary hospital, but made a full recovery by the following day. She also urged other dog owners to be aware of ‘discarded drugs and other toxic substances’. Astie Cameron, deputy team leader of Lochaber MRT, said it was suspected that Tokyo had ‘ingested something that made her critically unwell’. Maggie, a 70lb Turkish Akbash, had sore paws and refused to go further on the way down. A stretcher party complete with chicken stick treats was dispatched to assist. Tokyo’s rescue was the team’s 116th callout in what is heading to be a record year.المصدر: Daily Mail | Source: Daily Mail
