Real Madrid have taken a firm stance against the Spanish Football Federation, distancing themselves from its structures and describing the domestic competition as “compromised.”
According to Spanish outlet AS, the club has effectively withdrawn from ongoing efforts to reform the refereeing system, signaling a growing breakdown in relations between the two parties.

As reported by AS, “Real Madrid has little or nothing to do anymore with the current federation,” with the club stepping away from important discussions aimed at restructuring officiating in Spanish football. General manager José Ángel Sánchez was involved in early talks but ultimately informed Federation president Rafael Louzán that Madrid would not participate in the final agreement.

The tension intensified following Real Madrid’s recent game with Girona FC, where refereeing decisions by Alberola Rojas sparked frustration within the club.

AS notes that the officiating “reinforced their reasons for turning their backs on everything connected to the Football City in Las Rozas,” pointing to how the dissatisfaction has extended beyond isolated incidents into a broader institutional divide.

Refereeing at the center of the dispute

The club acknowledges that mistakes are part of football, but the report stressses that Madrid’s leadership is particularly frustrated by what they see as inconsistencies in decision-making.

The outlet points to two similar incidents involving Kylian Mbappé in the Girona match that were judged differently, raising questions internally about the use of VAR and the lack of corrective action.

According to AS, Real Madrid believe “the battle is already lost” but remain determined to maintain their position unless significant changes are made to the refereeing system.

The widening gap was also visible during Madrid’s recent UEFA Champions League match against FC Bayern Munich. Federation president Rafael Louzán attended the match but did not sit alongside Aleksander Čeferin, symbolizing the current disconnect.

For now, Real Madrid have no intention of restoring ties with the Federation. As long as concerns over officiating persist, the club’s stance is unlikely to soften.
