Justin Setterfield/Getty Images Share articleChelsea have been handed a boost with the news that captain Reece James and Levi Colwill are in contention to return to the squad for the game against Nottingham Forest on Monday. The Athletic revealed in March that James was going to be ruled out for several weeks after sustaining a hamstring strain late in the 1-0 defeat at home by Newcastle United. The England international has missed his side’s last five games. Colwill has not played for the senior team this term after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury on the first day of pre-season training. However, he made a significant step closer to making a comeback last Saturday by playing over 99 minutes for the Under-21s against Middlesbrough. “Reece is back in training, Levi is back in training and both are looking good,” interim head coach Calum McFarlane said at a press conference on Friday. “There is a little way to go before the game and we will see how they do. But both are looking promising. “We are taking it day by day. Levi has had a long injury, Reece had a really good run and got injured again. There are a lot of games still to play so we don’t want to push too much and hopefully they come through. Could they be in the squad on Monday? Potentially yes.” Even if the pair are not picked to face Nottingham Forest, Chelsea will still have four matches after that. Three of those are in the Premier League, which will determine whether the club can qualify for European competition next season via their position in the table. Chelsea are currently eighth, just two points behind Brighton & Hove Albion in sixth. Perhaps more significantly, James and Colwill are on course to be available for selection for the FA Cup final against Manchester City on May 16, which could also have a bearing on which, if any, European competition Chelsea feature in next term.
