Mike Christy / Getty Images Share full articleCINCINNATI — The Cincinnati Reds optioned outfielder Noelvi Marte to Triple-A Louisville on Monday. They are expected to recall outfielder Rece Hinds to take his roster spot in time for the series against the San Francisco Giants that begins on Tuesday at Great American Ball Park, according to a team source. The Reds’ offense as a whole has struggled to start the 2026 season, but Marte has struggled as much — if not more — than anyone else. The starter in right field on Opening Day, Marte was just 4 for 29 to start the season with 10 strikeouts and two walks. All four of his hits have been singles. Hinds, 25, hit .410 with five home runs in 43 plate appearances this spring. Hinds’ performance didn’t dip much at Triple A, where he is 17 for 48 (.354) with nine of those hits going for extra bases, including five home runs. Hinds made a splash in his initial call-up in 2024 when he hit five home runs in his first six games. In his time in the majors last season, he had just five hits in 45 plate appearances. For his career at the big-league level, Hinds has a 38.9 percent strikeout rate and 5.3 percent walk rate. This spring, he cut down on his strikeouts and through his first 13 games at Triple A, he’s walked 12 times with 15 strikeouts. Hinds, a right-handed hitter like Marte, can play all three outfield spots. Marte moved from third base to right field last season. He debuted in 2023 and was expected to start 2024 as the team’s third baseman. During spring of 2024, Marte was suspended 80 games for a failed drug test and then hit just .210 upon his return. Last season, he hit .263/.300/.448 with 14 home runs in 90 games after beginning the year at Triple A. “Boy, he’s just having a tough time,” Reds manager Terry Francona said of Marte’s slump. “It looks like he’s trying to hit everything. When you see him go up there and swing at a 2-0 breaking ball, it just … sometimes it’s hard to let the game come to you. He’s just trying to hit everything right now.” Spot the pattern.
