off Alex Grimm via Getty Images Share articleReal Madrid have been known to not take defeats well. This is the most successful club in Champions League history with a record 15 titles, so it is perhaps to be expected that they are not used to losing. Many of the club’s players and officials infamously skipped the 2024 Ballon d’Or ceremony when Manchester City’s Rodri won over Vinicius Junior. And, after a Champions League epic in their quarter-final second leg against Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena last night, they were again left with a feeling of injustice after losing 4-3 on the night and 6-4 on aggregate. Midfielder Eduardo Camavinga came on in the 62nd minute with his side 3-2 up and level with Bayern on aggregate. Twelve minutes later, the France international was shown a yellow card for grabbing Jamal Musiala with two hands as the attacking midfielder led Bayern on the break. Madrid’s players did not dispute that warning, but his second yellow and subsequent red card in the 86th minute left them in disbelief. It was a crushing blow they never recovered from, as they conceded two late goals to Luis Diaz and Michael Olise and were eliminated. Some of the Spanish capital’s newspapers seemed to share that opinion of Camavinga’s sending off. Marca’s front cover read “What an injustice!” with a shocked picture of Camavinga, below, while AS showed a picture of Kylian Mbappe pleading with Slovenian referee Slavko Vincic with the caption “Until the referee wanted”. ⭐ La eliminación del Real Madrid en Champions tras la roja a Camavinga protagoniza nuestra portada de este jueves pic.twitter.com/I0ZAPOmrKi — MARCA (@marca) April 15, 2026 And, while players refused to speak to the media afterwards, Jude Bellingham offered his assessment as he walked past reporters in the stadium’s mixed zone: “It’s a joke,” he said in Spanish. Here, we break down how Madrid reacted to that red card, and how the protests continued after the full-time whistle, with Arda Guler also seeing red. Camavinga came on for Brahim Diaz. It was a defensive change from Madrid head coach Alvaro Arbeloa as they looked to make it to extra time, with Camavinga’s first yellow likely to be what he was brought on to do: help break up attacks. The 23-year-old brought down Musiala with a two-handed grab of his shirt. Few could argue against the subsequent yellow card shown by Vincic. Eight minutes later, and just 20 minutes after being brought on, Camavinga commits his second yellow-card offence and is sent off. It starts after he trips up Harry Kane… He might have got away with that foul, but he chose to chase the loose ball and dribble it away from Joshua Kimmich, preventing a quick restart by the Germans, before picking it up and dropping it again. Kimmich chases Camavinga down to get the ball back and protests to Vincic. He is soon joined by his team-mates, including Kane, who sense this could be a second bookable offence to reduce Madrid to 10 men. Preventing the restart of play is a blanket yellow card in most European leagues, but it is often punished inconsistently. After Bayern’s protests, Vincic shows Camavinga his second yellow, to the player’s great shock. The referee then turns back towards the Bayern players, who appear to remind the official that this is Camavinga’s second booking and that he needs to be sent off. Camavinga looks even more dumbfounded after the referee shows the red card. Some could argue it was a harsh second yellow, and it did seem as if Vincic briefly forgot it was Camavinga’s second before being reminded by Bayern players, but the Madrid substitute was treading a fine line and should have known better. Madrid players, unsurprisingly, did not see the referee’s perspective. They appeared shocked, before Kylian Mbappe, Jude Bellingham, Guler and others immediately surrounded the match official. It was another swing in an intense football match. Bellingham and Vinicius Jr had already been involved in an agitated exchange between team-mates in the 83rd minute, after the Brazil forward lost a duel with Dayot Upamecano. Footage from Spanish broadcaster Movistar also showed Madrid’s unused substitute and club captain Dani Carvajal coming off the bench to point and shout at the match officials after Luis Diaz’s 89th-minute effort, which compounded Madrid’s misery. Vinicius Jr reacted to Diaz’s goal by clapping, seemingly a sarcastic ovation towards Camavinga’s sending off. And things went from bad to worse for Madrid when Michael Olise sent an exquisite finish into the top left corner in the fourth minute of added time, extinguishing any hope for Arbeloa’s side. Madrid’s protests continued after the match, with many players, including Bellingham and Guler, following Vincic. That led to Guler, who scored two spectacular first-half goals, being sent off after the final whistle. Whether it was a red card for Camavinga or not, Madrid cannot entirely blame the decision for conceding two goals with four of the 90 minutes remaining. Their players appeared incensed when walking past reporters in the Allianz’s mixed zone on their way out of the ground. As well as Bellingham calling it a “joke”, Eder Militao described it as an “injustice” while Antonio Rudiger added, “You saw what I saw, right?”. “No one can understand why a player would be sent off in a match like this,” Arbeola said in his post-match press conference. “It’s clear that the tie was over at that moment. It’s unfair. We’re absolutely gutted because the tie slipped away from us in a way we couldn’t control.” A breakdown in extra time with a fatigued 10 men would have been understandable. Instead, Bayern were able to seize on Madrid’s late disintegration in normal time following Camavinga’s moment of petulance. Spot the pattern.
