Upgrades could be sought in other areas, too, and the club will be keen to sort out the futures of first-team players who are nearing the end of their contracts or are out of favour. Familiar faces out on loan also face uncertain futures. Goalkeeper Andre Onana is enjoying life in Turkey with Trabzonspor, Marcus Rashford has relished a new start in Spain with Barcelona, and Rasmus Hojlund is nearing a permanent move to Napoli after returning to Serie A on loan. But have their loans been successful? Where will they play next season? And how about Jadon Sancho, Harry Amass and United’s other on-loan prospects? Here, The Athletic runs through the loanees’ futures as their temporary deals near an end. Eager to keep him beyond this season, Trabzonspor are very impressed with Onana, who recently saved three penalties in a Turkish Cup quarter-final shootout to beat Samsunspor. Club president Ertugrul Dogan is ready to open talks with United if the 30-year-old goalkeeper confirms he wants to stay, although they are unsure whether they can meet United’s financial demands. Onana has two years left on his contract but is prioritising regular first-team football. Senne Lammens has nailed down a starting role at Old Trafford, so Onana would face a difficult battle to convince the manager, whether that is Carrick or someone else, to keep him, and United’s decision-makers are willing to listen to offers. Tranzonspor are paying Onana’s full wages, which will increase next season in line with a clause in his contract when United return to the Champions League. The Cameroon international has not given up on his ambition to regain the metaphorical No 1 shirt at United and may join their pre-season tour, given other senior ‘keepers will be at the World Cup, but it will be a surprise if he is there when the season begins in August. A strong season from the 22-year-old goalkeeper helped Bristol City push for the play-offs before they dropped off in the second half of the campaign. Supporters voted him Bristol City’s player of the season and young player of the season, and he also won the players’ player of the year award. Vitek made 41 appearances in the Championship and kept 12 clean sheets, including in his final game on Saturday, a 2-0 win against Stoke City. The Czech Republic youth international is on his third loan spell, and another temporary deal has not been ruled out. He wants to play rather than be a backup to Lammens, but United will need options in the squad should 28-year-old Altay Bayindir look to leave. Despite a very impressive first half of the season on loan at Sheffield Wednesday, uncertainty at the Championship strugglers led to the 19-year-old switching to Norwich in January, where he suffered a serious hamstring injury in training after just one appearance. Amass returned to United to undergo rehabilitation. He will have one year left on his contract, but is likely to head out with the first team on pre-season to be assessed by staff before any decision is made on his future. The 22-year-old midfielder spent the first half of the campaign on loan at West Bromwich Albion, but fitness issues and middling form restricted him to 12 Championship appearances before a calf injury ended the spell early. A move to Hull in January was designed to revive his campaign, but injuries were an issue again. A twisted ankle after a collision in training ended his season prematurely, but Hull have approached United about another loan next season. However, the planned overhaul in midfield means United want to assess Collyer over the summer. Hull have a shot of promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs, the outcome of which could influence United’s decision. After recovering from a fractured eye socket earlier in the campaign, Kone, 20, has spent the second half of the season with the INEOS-owned Laussane-Sports. The midfielder has made just one start and four substitute appearances in the Swiss Super League, and missed the past four games with an injury. Another loan is likely next season, with the hope of a better fit and more game time. Sancho’s time at United might be over already. His contract will expire at the end of June. United are not expected to activate the option to extend his contract by a further 12 months, bringing an end to his five-year spell at Old Trafford. The Athletic reported last month that Borussia Dortmund are interested in re-signing the 26-year-old winger. He has made 36 appearances at Villa, but has only registered one goal and three assists. The 23-year-old Denmark striker has scored 14 goals in 41 appearances for Napoli and looks set to move there permanently. Napoli have a £38million ($51m) obligation to buy Hojlund should they qualify for the Champions League, which they could do this weekend. Napoli are second, six points ahead of fifth-placed Roma, with three games to play. Enjoying life in Barcelona, Rashford wants to stay. He has 13 goals and 14 assists in 46 appearances, a decent return given he has started just 23 games. But The Athletic reported last month that their interest in retaining Rashford has cooled. He has scored three goals in his last five games in La Liga, helping Hansi Flick’s side close in on the title, but his performances since the turn of the year have not always been electric. Barcelona do not intend to trigger their €30million (£26.1m; $35.3m) option to buy the 28-year-old, and United appear unwilling to negotiate a lower fee. Carrick has not ruled out Rashford playing for United again. “There are decisions to be made in time on certain things, and obviously Marcus is in that situation,” United’s interim head coach said in a press conference last month. “Nothing’s been decided. It has to be, at a certain point, but there’s nothing to say at this stage.” Spot the pattern. Connect the terms Find the hidden link between sports terms
