Brian Fluharty / Getty Images Share article2The Toronto Raptors will be without starting guard Immanuel Quickley for the rest of their first-round series against the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Raptors said Quickley reinjured his right hamstring, which he hurt in the final game of the regular season, as he was going through the rehabilitation process. The team added that Quickley’s status will be updated as appropriate. The Raptors officially listed him as questionable heading into the first three games because of his hamstring strain, but he did not play in any of them. Jamal Shead started the first two games in Quickley’s place, while Ja’Kobe Walter started Game 3, which the Raptors won to cut their series deficit to 2-1. Game 4 is Sunday in Toronto. Quickley is the highest-volume 3-point shooter on the Raptors, one of the worst teams from the perimeter to make the playoffs. The thought was that Walter, who shot 47.6 percent from 3 after the All-Star break, would replace some of that missing spacing, putting the ball in Scottie Barnes’ hands more. However, Walter got in foul trouble early and ended up missing all six of his shots, including a trio of 3s. Walter is 4-for-14 from deep in the series. Shead hit five 3s in Game 1 before going 1-for-6 over the next two games. However, he was hugely helpful in Game 3, with five steals and five assists. According to matchup data on NBA.com, Shead has led the Raptors in time spent defending Donovan Mitchell, with the Cavaliers’ All-Star shooting just 3-for-9 with no free-throw attempts in nearly 13 minutes with Shead guarding him. Shead is not known for his perimeter shooting, which is why the Raptors were hoping Quickley could return to the series. Quickley took a team-high 6.8 3s per game this season, connecting on 37.4 percent. Without him, the Raptors have attempted just 76 3s through three games, 31 fewer than the Cavaliers. The Raptors are surviving thanks to some incredible efficiency from deep. They are shooting 44.7 percent from 3 in the series, with Barnes and RJ Barrett combining to go 16-for-28. Jamison Battle added four 3s of his own in the fourth quarter on Thursday after not figuring prominently in the first two games. Quickley missed eight games late in the regular season due to plantar fasciitis in his right foot. He returned for the last week of the regular season, helping the Raptors go 3-1 to avoid the Play-In Tournament and capture the fifth seed. However, he left at halftime of the final game, against Brooklyn, and did not return due to the hamstring injury. It’s unclear if the foot and hamstring injuries were related, although Quickley said before the series that had it been earlier in the season, he might have taken more time off. Spot the pattern.
