Agadir – Morocco and Germany held high-level talks on Thursday aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation in the energy sector, with a particular focus on advancing the country’s energy transition and expanding investment in emerging green industries.

The meeting took place at the headquarters of Morocco’s Energy Transition Sector in Rabat and brought together senior Moroccan officials and a German economic delegation led by Stefan Rouenhoff, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action.

The German delegation included representatives from major companies operating in energy, automotive, aviation, and logistics, reflecting Berlin’s broad economic interest in deepening cooperation with Morocco across strategic sectors.

Discussions were also attended by Mohamed Ouhmed, Morocco’s Secretary General of the Energy Transition Sector, and Bouzekri Razi, Secretary General of the Sustainable Development Sector, alongside ministry officials and representatives of affiliated institutions.

The meeting addressed what both sides described as the strength of Morocco-Germany relations, focusing on exploring new avenues for partnership and identifying investment opportunities, particularly in areas linked to clean energy and sustainable development.

“This meeting reflects the strength of Moroccan-German relations, built on continuous dialogue, mutual respect, and constructive cooperation,” Morocco’s Energy Ministry said. “It also served as an opportunity to exchange views on ways to strengthen bilateral partnership and explore new prospects for joint investment, particularly in strategic sectors related to energy transition and sustainable development.”

Energy transition emerged as a central pillar of the bilateral relationship. In recent years, cooperation between Rabat and Berlin in this domain has intensified, mobilizing significant financial and technical resources while aligning with Morocco’s broader structural reforms in the energy sector.

The discussions emphasized on the development of green hydrogen, a field increasingly seen as a cornerstone of future energy systems. Both parties underscored that collaboration in this area not only supports Morocco’s long-term sustainability goals but also strengthens its position as a competitive and reliable partner in global clean energy value chains.

“This cooperation has also seen qualitative development through its openness to innovative and strategic fields, foremost among them green hydrogen, thereby enhancing the country’s positioning as a reliable and ambitious player in these promising future sectors,” the ministry stated.

The meeting comes amid broader momentum in Moroccan-German relations, extending beyond economic cooperation to strategic and political alignment.

Germany has recently reaffirmed its support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as a basis for resolving the Western Sahara dispute, with Johann Wadephul conveying Berlin’s position during the Morocco-Germany Multilateral Strategic Dialogue in Rabat.

In a joint declaration issued after talks with Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, Germany welcomed United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, describing the autonomy initiative as a “serious and credible” foundation for negotiations toward a mutually acceptable solution.
