Rabat – The Azerbaijani Embassy of Morocco in Rabat opened a new exhibition Tuesday evening featuring Moroccan artists reinterpreting Azerbaijani culture in a unique cross-cultural showcase.

Held at the Galerie Bab Rouah, the event convened artists, diplomats, and members of the public for an artistic insight into the cultural bond between Morocco and Azerbaijan.

The warm and jovial atmosphere of the evening embodied the friendly relationship between the two countries which the event aimed to elevate.

Moroccan and Azerbaijan ties have in recent years represented a strong model for international collaboration with numerous partnerships in education, cultural diplomacy, and economic exchange. The two countries remain firm supporters of each other’s sovereignty.

Nadia El Kihal’s piece “Chellah Runway,” inspired by an event celebrating Azerbaijan culture at Chellah in April 2025, illustrates the growing cultural ties between the two countries.

Organizers emphasized the shared history, values, and artistic achievements between Azerbaijan and Morocco.

Speaking with Morocco World News (MWN) on the sidelines of the exhibition, Nazim Samadov, Ambassador of Azerbaijan to Morocco, noted that the Azerbaijani Embassy in Rabat and the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Communication partnered to organize an exhibition featuring 13 Moroccan artists, united by one theme: Inspiré par l’Azerbaïdjan : une perspective marocaine.”

He stressed the power of art, stating that it “is the best way” to understand other cultures. “I’m happy to see so many people interested. I invite everyone to visit Galerie Bab Rouah,” he added, emphasizing the historical significance of the venue in Rabat. “I’m excited to see this dialogue between cultures.”

‘Many similarities’

The exhibit reflects Azerbaijan’s use of cultural heritage to strengthen relationships worldwide. Hosting the event in Rabat also underscores Morocco’s position as a key cultural hub in Africa, where deep-rooted traditions meet global influences.

Abdelfattah Ben Abdeslam said given the embassy’s prompt he “sees many similarities” between Morocco and Azerbaijan. He explained that his work aims to capture the shared richness of both countries’ colors and cultures.

One of his paintings displayed is a vibrant depiction of the Bibi Heybat Mosque in Baku illustrating the idea of living heritage through a dynamic artistic interpretation. In his work, “architecture becomes a vessel for collective identity and shared memory.” His daughter, Noussaiba, an aspiring architect, jokingly added that she may have been part of his inspiration.

A common theme in the art revealed Morocco and Azerbaijan’s shared balancing act of preserving heritage and traditions that define the countries’ identities while navigating change in an increasingly globalized world.

The exhibition’s blend of Moroccan creativity with Azerbaijani inspiration showcases the power of art to transcend borders and build meaningful cultural connections.

The cultural exchange is open to the public at Galerie Bab Rouah until April 18.
