'Queen Elizabeth II: Her Life in Style' exhibition to open at Buckingham Palace

The Royal Collection Trust has announced the opening of the “Queen Elizabeth II: Her Life in Style”, an exhibition set to open at The King’s Gallery, Buckingham Palace on Saturday. The exhibition serves as a tribute to Queen Elizabeth II, showcasing the remarkable evolution of her style across 10 decades. It traces her journey “from birth to adulthood, from princess to queen, and from off-duty style to dressing for the global state” as described by the foundation. Two weeks ago, the Trust released a trailer offering a glimpse into the exhibition, highlighting the story behind her fashion legacy. The display will include clothing, jewellery, hats, shoes, and accessories, alongside never-before-seen design sketches, handwritten notes, and fabric samples. These items reveal the late monarch’s close personal involvement in shaping her wardrobe. Among the highlights are pieces such as her christening robe, bridesmaid dress, wedding gown, coronation dress, and the outfit she wore to the wedding of Princess Margaret. Caroline de Guitaut, the exhibition’s curator and Surveyor of The King’s Works of Art, stated: “In the year that she would have turned 100 years old, this exhibition will be a celebration of Queen Elizabeth's uniquely British style and her enduring fashion legacy.” More than a fashion exhibition, “Queen Elizabeth II: Her Life in Style” offers an intimate portrait of a monarch who used clothing as a powerful form of communication. By bringing together historic garments and personal design materials, the exhibition not only honours her legacy but also provides a deeper understanding into how her style became an enduring symbol of diplomacy and identity for Britain and the world.
