By GRAHAM GRANT, SCOTTISH HOME AFFAIRS EDITOR Published: 18:03, 14 June 2026 | Updated: 18:05, 14 June 2026 Scotland is set for a World Cup economic boost of more than £200million after the national team won its first match in the tournament for more than 30 years. Richard Marsh, a leading economist and government adviser, said the gain was likely to be the ‘largest economic impact in Scotland from a sports event that Scotland hasn’t hosted’. He said our participation in the World Cup for the first time in 28 years would lead to a spike in spending in hospitality at a scale ‘rarely seen outside major national sporting fixtures’. The prospect of a major cash injection to the economy came as the country celebrated its first World Cup win since 1990 in a 1-0 victory over Haiti in the early hours of Sunday morning. Around 40,000 Scotland fans made the trip to the U.S. for Scotland’s opening match of the tournament - which led to them topping star-studded Group C ahead of Morocco and Brazil. Thousands more fans at home stayed up late to watch in their living rooms or pubs, as vice-captain John McGinn scored in the 28th minute of the game at Boston Stadium in Foxborough. In a detailed analysis for the Mail, Mr Marsh, director of economics at 4-consulting and a member of the Scottish Government’s expert advisory group on economic statistics, said ‘conservatively nearly 2.6 million Scots are likely to watch World Cup 2026 matches’. John McGinn scored the winner in the 28th minute of the game at Boston Stadium in Foxborough He said: ‘Pubs and clubs are likely to attract 350,000–450,000 people, with major matches expected to fill venues to capacity. ‘Fan zones would add another 60,000–100,000 people per match day, with Glasgow and Edinburgh hosting the largest crowds, and other cities contributing meaningful numbers. ‘Home‑based social gatherings would form the biggest share, drawing 700,000–800,000 people.’ He said: ‘The impact is likely to be well over £200million (excluding spending associated with home gatherings) and may be higher still if Scotland progresses from the group stages. ‘This is probably the largest economic impact in Scotland from a sports event that Scotland hasn’t hosted.’ Mr Marsh, a fellow of the UK’s Royal Statistical Society, added: ‘With Scotland kicking off their World Cup campaign at 2am (sleep may be challenging even for those not watching the match), the country is braced for an unprecedented bout of collective national jet lag. ‘Football fans, and anyone in their vicinity, may turn up to work feeling like they’ve just flown back from North America.’ Scotland fans celebrate the win over Haiti at The Hydro in Glasgow The Hydro was just one of the venues hosting World Cup watch parties this weekend Pub owners said the ‘once in a generation’ opportunity presented by Scotland’s World Cup matches will provide a much-needed boost for trade. Some premises have reconfigured their layouts and installed more big-screen televisions, while others have enlisted pipers to bolster the feel-good atmosphere. The Scottish Beer and Pub Association estimated that the Scotland group games could generate an additional £7million for pubs, with the figure increasing to £28million if the team upsets the odds and makes it to the final. Many Scots will continue their celebrations on Monday which has been declared a Bank Holiday after John Swinney asked King Charles for special permission to mark the historic occasion. The move was branded a pre-election ‘bribe’ by opponents as the First Minister made the request just months before May’s Holyrood election. The Scottish Mail on Sunday estimated that only 250,000 Scots have been able to take the day off - at a potential cost to taxpayers of £64million. Meanwhile, jubilant Scots on both sides of the Atlantic enjoyed the party with sold-out fan zones at home and tens of thousands of Tartan Army footsoldiers in Boston. Fans chanted ‘no Scotland, no party’ as they celebrated the win, dancing on the floor of the venue. Mr Swinney, who was at the game, said: ‘This is a seismic moment for Scotland which could pave the way for the squad to reach the knockout stages of the World Cup for the first time. ‘I am absolutely ecstatic and I know people the length and breadth of Scotland will be jubilant and united in joy at this landmark win. ‘I know I speak for everyone in Scotland when I say we could not be prouder of the team for what they have achieved so far.’ He added: ‘It was an honour to be in Boston to witness this historic moment on behalf of the people of Scotland and share it with Tartan Army fans from around the world. ‘The fans have once again showcased their famous warmth and openness to the world. ‘The world is watching Scotland, so let’s make history.’ Before the game, the Governor of Massachusetts, Maura Healey, joked the hot weather was making Scotland fans thirsty. She said: ‘I think I have to call Canada and I’m going to have to call the Governors in Maine, to say “put out an SOS for alcohol”.’ Closer to home, one of the younger supporters was Darcy Morrison, 12, who was at Glasgow’s sold-out OVO Hydro with her mother and brother – and around 5,500 others. She said: ‘It was really good, but I think we could have done better. ‘I thought we were going to beat them 4 – 0 but we didn’t.’ Denise Rae, 52, from Aberdeen, was dressed in a Scotland bucket hat and sunglasses to celebrate the moment. ‘It’s been a long time coming. Come on, Scotland, we can do it. Let’s get to the next round. No Scotland, no party!’ Scottish Tory leader Russell Findlay said: ‘Everyone in Scotland went to sleep with a smile on their faces while the Tartan Army probably didn’t even get to bed in Boston. ‘It was a cracking but typically nerve-wracking start to the campaign and it gives us a fighting chance to get out of the group stage for the first time ever.’ Police praised fans’ behaviour at home with only a ‘couple of isolated incidents’ marring the party mood.
