Prisoner on the run after escaping custody in Australia as police launch urgent search and warn public: Do not approach

By KYLIE STEVENS, SENIOR BREAKING NEWS REPORTER, AUSTRALIA Published: 00:41, 6 July 2026 | Updated: 00:41, 6 July 2026 Northern Territory Police have launched an urgent search after a handcuffed prisoner escaped while being transferred into Royal Darwin Hospital on Sunday night. Police said Isaac Thompson, 26, broke free from custody about 8.15pm as officers escorted him from an ambulance to the hospital's emergency department. At the time, Thompson was wearing only shorts and socks and remained handcuffed, according to NT Police. Sergeant Kenneth Bradshaw urged the public not to approach Thompson, warning he is a known associate of the Mongols Outlaw Motorcycle Gang. 'We're asking members of the public not to approach him,' he said. 'If you see him, call Triple Zero immediately.' Sgt Bradshaw urged Thompson to hand himself in.
