Princess Ingrid Alexandra began a fresh chapter today as she arrived at the University of Oslo for her first day as an exchange student.

The 22-year-old future Queen of Norway will be studying within the Faculty of Social Sciences, having transferred from the University of Sydney in Australia.

Her decision to relocate back to Scandinavia was driven by her mother, Crown Princess Mette-Marit's, illness.

The 52-year-old underwent a lung transplant procedure in June after she was diagnosed with chronic pulmonary fibrosis in 2018.

The condition leads to scarring of the lung tissue and severely impairs breathing.

Prior to her transplant surgery, the Crown Princess had been described as "seriously ill".

When she was placed on the transplant list, Professor Are Holm, a respiratory specialist at Oslo University Hospital, revealed the list is reserved for patients with just "one year left to live".

The operation took place in June, prompting her eldest daughter to cut short her time in Australia and return home.

It was her father, Crown Prince Haakon, who shed light on the reasoning behind the move, telling Norwegian outlet NRK: "She wants to be with her mother."

The Norwegian Palace announced last month that Mette-Marit had been discharged from hospital after undergoing the "life-saving" operation.

Dr Holm said Mette-Marit's condition is "as good as can be expected" following the procedure.

The crown princess released a statement saying she is "deeply grateful" and has been "given the gift of life".

In the wake of the operation, Ingrid Alexandra opted to remain in her home country rather than return to Australia.

The family's ordeal has cast a shadow over what has otherwise been a formative period in the young princess's life.

The 22-year-old princess embarked on a three-year Social Sciences degree at the University of Sydney in July 2025, where she resided in on-campus accommodation.

Whether she will eventually return to complete her studies in Australia remains uncertain, though she has not formally deferred her course, leaving the door open for a future move back.

Her younger brother, Prince Sverre Magnus, is 20 years old.

The princess has previously spoken with conviction about her academic pursuits.

"I definitely think that my education will be very relevant to the job I will do in the future," she has said, acknowledging the weight of the role that awaits her.
