Princess Charlene of Monaco made a stunning impression at the principality's prestigious annual Red Cross Gala last week, drawing clear comparisons to her late mother-in-law, the legendary Princess Grace.

The 48-year-old royal graced the red carpet wearing a champagne-hued gown by Elie Saab, paired with a coordinating clutch from the same fashion house.

Her vintage Hollywood waves completed the look, creating the silver-screen elegance for which Grace Kelly was renowned.

They were joined by Camille Gottlieb, the daughter of Princess Stéphanie and a granddaughter of Grace.

It was a special occasion for Charlene, who celebrated the 20th anniversary of her first appearance at the gala.

She told Vanity Fair that her first Red Cross ball "was a baptism by fire".

She added: "On the day of the ball, I’d been playing volleyball all day at the beach and didn't think about getting ready until late afternoon. I borrowed a green dress from a friend, did my own hair, and painted my nails red…I looked like a Christmas tree."

This year, Prince Albert, 69, accompanied his wife into the event, held annually at Salle des Étoiles in Monte Carlo, where the couple upheld their long-standing tradition of opening proceedings with a dance together.

Despite this, the two had never met — Princess Grace was killed in a motor accident in 1982, some 18 years before her son would encounter his future bride.

Both women share a remarkable trajectory — outsiders who married into the Grimaldi dynasty. Before her 2011 wedding to Prince Albert, Charlene Wittstock was an Olympic swimmer representing South Africa, a world away from the gilded corridors of Monaco's palace.

Princess Grace's path was arguably even more dramatic. Born Grace Kelly, she was an Oscar-winning actress who abandoned Hollywood at just 26 to wed Prince Rainier III.

Speaking to People in 2022, on the 40th anniversary of Princess Grace's death, Prince Albert reflected on how vividly her memory endures.

"It doesn't seem like 40 years," he said. "Many times during a day, a week, not only do I find myself thinking of her, but numbers of people still recall her to me."
