Prevent washing machine mould and musty odours by doing 1 simple task after washing clothes

Washing machines are prime breeding grounds for mould and bacteria due to the damp environment within the appliance. This can lead to unpleasant smells, mould growth in the seal, and poorly cleaned laundry. Frustrated by my washing machine's persistent musty odour , I experimented with various solutions to find what actually worked. The solution was simply to leave the washing machine door ajar for an extended period after each wash cycle. This had completely escaped my attention, as my appliance is integrated and positioned behind a cupboard. Keeping the door open after every wash is an uncomplicated yet highly effective way to prevent mould growth and unpleasant smells. Throughout a wash cycle, moisture collects in the drum, the rubber door seal, and the detergent compartment. When the door is shut straight after use, this trapped dampness generates a warm, humid atmosphere that's perfect for mould and mildew to flourish. By leaving the door partially open, air can flow freely throughout the machine, enabling any residual water and moisture to evaporate far more rapidly. Enhanced ventilation maintains the dryness of internal components and minimises the risk of odours. This is especially crucial for front-loading washing machines, which tend to retain moisture around the door seal. Beyond enhancing hygiene, this straightforward practice can also prolong the lifespan of your washing machine. Mould and moisture accumulation can damage rubber seals and other parts over time. It takes only a few seconds to leave the door slightly open after each wash, but I've not experienced any musty smells or mould ever since. It's also crucial to clean the detergent drawer regularly with warm, soapy water, as it's a common mould hotspot, and to ensure the filter remains clean.
