Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) Commander-in-Chief Mazloum Abdi held high-level talks with Presidential Envoy Ziyad al-Ayesha and Second Corps Commander Awad al-Jassim to address mounting security concerns in Hassakeh Governorate, recent attacks on state institutions, the status of displaced civilians, and mechanisms to expedite ongoing integration arrangements.

In a statement released on his official X account, Abdi described the meeting as constructive and focused on safeguarding stability across north-eastern Syria.

“I had the honor of receiving Presidential Envoy Mr. Ziyad al-Ayesha and Second Corps Commander Mr. Awad al-Jassim during a visit in which we discussed several critical files related to the security and stability of Hassakeh Governorate,” Abdi said.

He noted that discussions centered on recent assaults targeting government facilities, urgent issues concerning displaced civilians, and steps needed to finalize and accelerate integration between regional structures and state institutions.

Abdi expressed optimism about the outcome of the talks, saying both sides reached actionable understandings on several key matters. “We reached a series of solutions and experienced a positive atmosphere alongside serious steps toward resolving these issues in a manner that serves the security and stability of the governorate,” he added.

Escalating Tensions and Regional Unrest

The meeting comes amid a period of heightened unrest across several urban centers in north-eastern Syria. Tensions escalated after returning displaced families were subjected to attacks and friction near Ras al-Ayn. The group represented the first convoy of more than 400 families attempting to return to their homes after nearly seven years of displacement.

Protests quickly spread to major towns, including Qamishli, Hassakeh, Ain al-Arab (Kobani), and Tell Tamer. Demonstrations were accompanied by sporadic attacks on security and government headquarters, with incidents in which the Syrian national flag was removed from official buildings.

In response, Internal Security Forces imposed a temporary curfew in Ain al-Arab and launched targeted operations to apprehend individuals involved in acts of violence and vandalism. Security officials in Hassakeh confirmed the arrest of several suspects linked to the unrest, while return convoys to Ras al-Ayn have been temporarily suspended as a precaution to ensure civilian safety.

As efforts continue to restore order, Abdi called for restraint and urged all parties to protect civil and security institutions, stressing that broader work remains underway to reactivate state structures and complete integration arrangements across the region.
