President urges early execution of China MoUs

President Asif Ali Zardari on Monday noted that Pakistan's cooperation with China presents an important opportunity to modernise infrastructure, strengthen industrial capacity and advance socio-economic development. The president received a detailed briefing on the implementation of the Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) signed during his recent visits to the People's Republic of China. The briefing, held at the Chief Minister House Karachi, reviewed ongoing work relating to joint initiatives between Sindh and Chinese partners. The president said these agreements must translate into practical results, with clear timelines, institutional coordination and sustained follow-up. He stressed the need for removing administrative bottlenecks, ensuring transparency and facilitating investors to accelerate project execution. The briefing covered progress across a range of sectors including fire safety and emergency response systems, energy and fertiliser production, livestock development, agriculture, environmental management and recycling technologies. Updates were also shared on initiatives aimed at improving food security, enhancing disease control mechanisms in livestock and promoting sustainable industrial practices. The president directed that all departments maintain close coordination with concerned authorities and Chinese counterparts and ensure regular monitoring through dedicated mechanisms. President Zardari received a detailed briefing on the functioning, development plans and institutional requirements of Cadet College Petaro, his alma mater. The briefing focused on progress made on decisions taken in earlier board of governors meetings and outlined key priorities for the institution's continued development, alongside proposals to modernise academic delivery and expand its scope. The president was briefed on progress regarding the provision of financial assistance for pension arrears, installation of a 1.2MW solar power plant, establishment of an ERP system and upgradation of academic and residential facilities, including ICT infrastructure and cadets' mess arrangements. Measures relating to scholarships through an endowment fund, enhancement of government grant in aid and construction of a boundary wall to prevent encroachment were also reviewed. The meeting also considered steps for ensuring the institution's long-term sustainability, including housing schemes and health insurance for employees, as well as the establishment of a model high school affiliated with the college. The president was informed that 50% of the students belong to Sindh province while the remaining 50 per cent come from other parts of the country.
