It looked like the subscribers had sewn up first place after a remarkable run of predictions over the past few weeks, timing their charge like Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City. But who’s this coming up with a late charge? It couldn’t be, could it? Yes… it’s six-year-old Wilfred! What a time for the boy wonder to pick up a record-breaking 16 points, with three spot-on predictions — including the big one, Manchester City 2-1 Arsenal. At full-time at the Etihad Stadium, Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice was seen mouthing the words, “It’s not done, it’s not done”, reminding his team-mates that they are still top of the table despite losing form at the worst possible time. !function(){"use strict";window.addEventListener("message",(function(a){if(void 0!==a.data["datawrapper-height"]){var e=document.querySelectorAll("[id='datawrapper-chart-gQbVp']");for(var t in a.data["datawrapper-height"])for(var r=0;r Well, it’s not done in here either. I waved the white flag last week after another miserable week. But Wilfred, to borrow from former Newcastle United manager Kevin Keegan, is still fighting for this title … and the subscribers have got to go to — well, you don’t actually have to go anywhere — and get something. Each week since the season began, four of us — Wilfred, a guest subscriber on rotation, an algorithm and I — have been predicting the Premier League results with varying degrees of success. We’re awarding three points for a correct scoreline and one point for a correct result. We’re also awarding a bonus point for any “unique” prediction, so whereas Wilfred and guest subscriber Brad picked up three points apiece for Newcastle United 1-2 Bournemouth, Wilfred picked up four points for both Everton 1-2 Liverpool and Manchester City 2-1 Arsenal. It means the subscribers’ lead over Wilfred has been cut from 18 points last week to a less daunting eight with five weeks to go. !function(){"use strict";window.addEventListener("message",(function(a){if(void 0!==a.data["datawrapper-height"]){var e=document.querySelectorAll("[id='datawrapper-chart-cxY0V']");for(var t in a.data["datawrapper-height"])for(var r=0;r Week 34 is slightly different because it has been split into two: three midweek games followed by seven between Friday and Monday. The Premier League website will tell you that the first three games, on Tuesday and Wednesday, are a continuation of week 33, but that is clearly an FPL-convenient nonsense. The three midweek games have been brought forward because Chelsea, Leeds United and Manchester City are involved in the FA Cup semi-finals at the weekend. So that’s three midweek matches, which we’ll predict now, and then we’ll preview the weekend’s fixtures on Friday. All of which means we’ll be hearing from this week’s guest subscriber, Leeds United fan Andrew from Brooklyn, New York, again on Friday. Good luck, Andrew. Chelsea have lost six of their last seven games in all competitions, the exception coming in the FA Cup against Port Vale, who are 23rd in League One. The whole BlueCo project is failing — and at Brighton, the club they have plundered players, coaches and recruitment executives from over the past four years, there must be at least some sense of schadenfreude. Liam Rosenior is right when he says his team have performed well at times, not least in the 1-0 defeat by Manchester United on Saturday, but they are just a fundamentally flawed team: plenty of talent, but so few players you can rely on. The pressure on Rosenior is growing, but last weekend’s protests were right to focus on failings at boardroom and executive level, rather than the coach or indeed the players. The whole thing is a mess. Brighton 2-1 Chelsea I can’t see this fixture without thinking of their clash on the final weekend of the 1989-90 season, when Leeds won 1-0 to secure promotion to the old First Division (Premier League in new money) and their supporters went on the rampage through Bournemouth. If that sounds like a gratuitous pop at Leeds fans, it isn’t; it was a different era, in which Leeds were crowned champions of England two years later. These days, it's so hard for even a club of Leeds’ size to break through the Premier League’s glass ceiling. They have done so well, as a newly promoted team, to move eight points clear of the relegation zone. Bournemouth, flying high in eighth place, are one of those clubs they will look to emulate next season. I remember covering this fixture in the final weeks of the 2018-19 season, when, as now, Manchester City were locked in a tense battle for the title. They dominated the game — 25 shots to Burnley’s two — but Burnley’s defenders threw their bodies in the way of everything and it was all getting so nervous until Sergio Aguero scrambled the decisive goal in the 64th minute. I don’t hold this Manchester City team in the same regard as the one that won those first two Premier League titles under Pep Guardiola, but nor do Burnley, resigned to relegation, look anything like as obdurate as they did back in the Sean Dyche era. And, with goal difference threatening to become a factor in the title race, I can imagine Erling Haaland enjoying himself at Turf Moor. !function(){"use strict";window.addEventListener("message",(function(a){if(void 0!==a.data["datawrapper-height"]){var e=document.querySelectorAll("[id='datawrapper-chart-mbb25']");for(var t in a.data["datawrapper-height"])for(var r=0;r Spot the pattern.
