Police launch manhunt after dozens of rare silver antiques are stolen from National Trust manor house

Around 25 objects made of silver, brass and pewter were stolen from Baddesley Clinton, near Solihull, Warwickshire, the former historic home of the Ferrers family. Among the items stolen was a Georgian-era silver salver – a flat plate engraved with the Ferrers family arms. The item had previously been kept in storage before it was finally put on display in February. Yet just months later it was stolen after thieves ransacked the historic building. The salver is thought to have cost around £12 back in the 1750s when it was crafted, around twice the annual wage of a housemaid at the time.  It is thought to be worth around £2,300 now. The plate also bears the mark of Dorothy Mills, one of the only female registered silversmiths of the 1700s. It was believed to be the only example of her work in a publicly accessible UK collection.  Baddesley Clinton was closed after thieves stole dozens of rare silver antiques A silver salver, a flat plate, engraved with the Ferrers family arms was among the stolen items The plate bears the mark of Dorothy Mills, one of the only female registered silversmiths of the 1700s A silver stirrup cup in the shape of a fox was also stolen from the manor house Other stolen objects include a silver stirrup cup in the shape of a fox and a pair of candelabra.  The items were stolen from the stately home in Warwickshire in the early hours of July 30.  Police are appealing for information from the public to help locate them.  Ann Ryan, National Trust operations manager for Baddesley Clinton, said: 'This has been a very upsetting incident for our staff and volunteers, and we appreciate the support shared by visitors and members of the public on social media. 'The collection items that have been taken are important to Baddesley, especially the Georgian silver salver, which is engraved with the Ferrers family's arms. Given its distinctive markings this piece in particular may be identified if offered for sale. 'We very much hope the objects will be returned, so they can be enjoyed by everyone.' The Grade-I listed building was closed for two days following the ransack, although the gardens, parkland, cafe and shop remained open. Baddesley Clinton was once a sanctuary for Catholics who were persecuted in the 1590s.
