Published: 09:31, 6 August 2026 | Updated: 09:59, 6 August 2026 A pervert who performed a sex act while sitting next to a mother and her child on board an Emirates flight has avoided jail time.  Britto Lorence, 27, from Kerala, India, exposed himself on the long-haul flight travelling from Dubai to the UK in June last year.  The biotechnology engineer, who has a Master's qualification, was sat in one of the three seats in a row, the other two occupied by the mother and her baby son, as the flight took off.  A court heard that, as the woman got up to make her child a feed, she noticed that the 27-year-old had a blanket over his lap.  Initially, the mother from Australia feared Lorence was concealing a weapon, but realised that he was masturbating.  Lorence, of Abingdon Road, Middlesbrough, was reported to cabin crew and arrested upon arrival at Newcastle International Airport.  The victim said she had been 'deeply distressed' by the incident but had tried not to get too alarmed on the flight for the sake of her son.  The woman said: 'I tried to hold my emotions together to stop myself causing my son any further alarm.' The 27-year-old, from Kerala, India, had been sat in a row of three on board an Emirates flight travelling from Dubai to the UK last year  Lorence appeared outside Newcastle Magistrates Court for outraging public decency When she was told she would not need to give evidence in a trial, she said: 'This is a blessing and I pray for the person involved.'  He appeared in the dock earlier this year to plead not guilty to one count of outraging public decency, and the case was listed for trial.  However, on the day the trial was due to start at Newcastle Magistrates' Court in May, he changed his plea to guilty.  The case was adjourned for the preparation of a pre-sentence report but, in the meantime, Lorence applied for his guilty plea to be changed again as he felt he'd been 'put under pressure' to admit the offence.  During a hearing this week, District Judge Kate Meek refused the application to vacate his plea and, instead, she sentenced Lorence to an 18-month community order, with 150 hours of unpaid work. He was also ordered to pay a total of £914 in costs and a victim surcharge.  The judge said: 'Your guilty plea stands. You're convicted by your guilty plea and you fall to be sentenced. Your offence was a serious offence.  'It is also going to be treated more seriously because the people affected by it were passengers on a plane and they couldn't absent themselves from the situation, and one of those people sat next to you was a very young child.  'You were masturbating and the harm that was caused indicates a community order.  'I acknowledge you pleaded guilty on the day of your trial but you have then done all you can to try and set aside that plea so you will receive a very small amount of credit.'  At a previous hearing, Brian Payne, prosecuting, said Lorence had been sat beside the victim and her child on an Emirates flight between Dubai and Newcastle on June 2 last year.  Mr Payne said: '[The victim] described the male [Lorence] having a pillow on his lap and he initially appeared to be asleep.' However, Mr Payne said the woman then spotted that he was acting indecently. Mr Payne continued: 'She raised the alarm by going to cabin staff.' The court heard that Lorence had a visa to work in the UK and was a manager of a cafe.  He had previously completed a Masters degree at Teesside University in food science, and before that gained a BTech in biotechnology at Abdul Kalam Technological University in his home country before gaining a post as a development technologist with Zaara Biotech LLC.  Lorence still denies that he committed the offence.
