Residents living near a heaving beach in Wales have shared their anger over gridlocked traffic. The typical summer disruption returned to Newborough on Anglesey when an influx of visitors brought the long-suffering community to a complete halt. Last year Natural Resources Wales doubled parking charges at Traeth Llanddwyn beach, which gained fame through House of the Dragon and receives constant promotion across social media platforms. Yet during a sweltering bank holiday weekend this price increase did little to curb visitor numbers, and by 9.30am on Tuesday the 300-space beach car park had reached capacity during half-term week. Frantic visitors then resorted to illegal parking, blocking residential roads near the beach. Meanwhile, Anglesey Council wardens issued tickets to 27 vehicles parked on A4080 verges beside Newborough Forest, that visitors have to pass to access the beach. It was also alleged that road signage and parking applications failed to indicate the car park had reached capacity. Visitors who pressed on to Newborough grew frustrated when confronted by a "roadblock" on the village's beach access route, reports North Wales Live . Repeated confrontations caused traffic to queue extensively. Residents, who had hoped the new traffic management arrangements would provide relief, once again found themselves unable to navigate through their own village. Online, a man said: "I was stuck at the square, chatting to one of the lads on the "road block". His mate was having a debate with a chap in an Audi who wouldn't take no for an answer. Meanwhile, the traffic was backing up in all directions!" A woman added: "Went past yesterday, it was chaos. I felt sorry for the blokes on the turning down to the beach – drivers could see the beach was full but they were indicating to turn down there anyway. "The cars were jam-packed trying to get through Newborough. I must have been there a good seven minutes trying to get through to go shopping. I managed to turn around and came home.. "I tried again today (Monday) and it was chaos there. Cars were parked outside the estates – it was terrible, not fair on the people that live there. Something has to be done to solve this problem, it's ridiculous." Local residents expressed anger at being trapped by visiting vehicles and campervans, with many parked on footpaths, obstructing pushchairs and children on bicycles. At Tyn-y-Cae estate vehicles were reportedly stationed on corners and junctions, blocking driveways. One person said: "I thought someone was having a party until I realised they were beachgoers." Lois Williams described parking as a "nightmare" in the Rhodfa Bach vicinity as visiting motors filled the roads. "Especially trying to get in and out of the drive as they double park," she said. With locals campaigning for "Parking for residents only" signage, Lois and fellow residents captured photographs and videos documenting the problems. Community representatives intend to submit the evidence to Anglesey Council. Some residents are calling on the local authority to provide "No Parking" cones for each household. One man explained: "Something has got to be done about these inconsiderate, ignorant, arrogant visitors before there is a bad accident." In a bid to alleviate the parking strain, the Y Maram camping and touring site absorbed a significant number of vehicles arriving in the area. This reignited longstanding calls from residents for a temporary park-and-ride scheme near the village to manage the surge of visitors during peak season. Advance warning matrix signs and a new ANPR system at Llanddwyn have been introduced to address local traffic issues, while Natural Resources Wales wardens work relentlessly to stamp out illegal camping. Fires pose a serious threat to the 2,500-acre forest, with a fire engine being called out on Sunday evening. Despite these measures, Newborough appears to still be struggling to handle sudden surges in visitor numbers during fine weather . On social media, a local man said: "On a scorching bank holiday, the start of half term and with 100,000 extra visitors due on Anglesey to attend the Eisteddfod – the system failed at the first major hurdle." Anglesey Council also issued 10 tickets at Traeth Porthdafarch yesterday. A spokesperson added: "Visitors travelling to Newborough wishing to visit the beach are strongly encouraged to park in a safe and responsible manner."
