Pentagon removes two more Army generals — newspaper

The US Department of War has removed not only Army Chief of Staff Randy George but also two more generals - David Hodne and William Green Jr. - from their posts, The Washington Post (WP) reported, citing sources. Hodne led the Training and Transformation Command, established last fall, while Green was the chief of Army chaplains. The dismissals came as the Army had deployed several thousand troops to the Middle East for a potential ground operation in Iran. Such personnel changes during military conflicts are highly unusual. As a result, Hegseth has almost entirely reshaped the US Joint Chiefs of Staff. The only members to retain their posts are Marine Corps Commandant Eric Smith and Chief of Space Operations Bradley Chance Saltzman, the newspaper said. In many cases, the dismissals occurred without any explanation. The Pentagon chief has repeatedly criticized Army generals. In particular, Hegseth is in conflict with Army Secretary Daniel Driscoll, a close friend of US Vice President J.D. Vance, sources told WP. "Hegseth can’t fire Driscoll," an anonymous official told the newspaper. "So he’s going to make his life hell." Since taking office in January 2025, Hegseth has ordered the dismissal of several generals, including former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Charles Brown. In April 2025, former Pentagon Spokesman John Ullyot wrote in an article published by Politico that "total chaos" prevailed in the department, caused in part by the dismissals.
