Pensioners could get extra £2,503 a year through DWP Pension Credit boost

Retirees claiming Pension Credit who also care for another adult could receive an additional £48.15 a week from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).

The payment, worth around £208.65 a month or £2,503.80 a year, is paid on top of both the state pension and standard Pension Credit.

The benefit is separate from the state pension and is designed to top up the income of eligible retirees.

It can still be available to people with other income, savings or who own their home. According to DWP figures, the benefit is worth around £4,300 a year on average.

For the 2026/27 tax year, the carer’s addition rose by 3.8 per cent, increasing from £46.40 to £48.15 a week — an uplift of £1.75 a week, or £91 a year.

The wider Pension Credit scheme increased by 4.8 per cent.

Single pensioners can now receive up to £238 a week, while couples may qualify for up to £363.25.

Baroness Sherlock, minister of state, confirmed in November that the Standard Minimum Guarantee would rise “by 4.8 per cent in line with the increase in average earnings”, while other benefit rates would increase “by 3.8 per cent, in line with the increase in the consumer prices index in the year to September 2025”.

The maximum Savings Credit payment also increased by 3.8 per cent.

To qualify for the additional carer’s payment, the claimant or their partner must receive Carer’s Allowance or, in Scotland, Carer Support Payment.

People who have applied for Carer’s Allowance but do not receive it because they are paid a higher contributory benefit may also qualify through what the DWP calls “underlying entitlement”.

DWP guidance published in May 2026 states that where both members of a couple meet either of those conditions, the additional amount is doubled.

If Carer’s Allowance or underlying entitlement ends, the extra Pension Credit payment continues for a further eight weeks.

For people receiving Scotland’s Carer Support Payment, the addition continues for 12 weeks following the death of the person they were caring for.

Claiming Pension Credit can also unlock a wide range of additional support.

Eligible households may receive a Winter Fuel Payment of up to £300 and a Warm Home Discount worth £150. People aged 75 and over may qualify for a free TV licence.

Recipients can also access Housing Benefit, Council Tax support and help with NHS costs, including dental treatment, glasses and travel to hospital appointments.

The DWP says Pension Credit provides both weekly financial support and access to further assistance for eligible pensioners.
