Peak-hour panic as sparks and blasts rip through Melbourne train

Published: 22:21, 1 June 2026 | Updated: 22:21, 1 June 2026 A dramatic overhead power fault left Melbourne commuters terrified after a series of loud explosions, sparks and smoke erupted inside a train carriage during the evening peak yesterday. Several loud bangs echoed through a Craigieburn line train near North Melbourne Station at about 6pm. Smoke quickly filled the carriage as sparks erupted overhead, prompting frightened passengers to scream and seek shelter. Metro Trains said the incident was caused by a fault with the overhead power lines. The affected train was reportedly stranded for about an hour after the incident, with passengers forced to remain on board while crews responded.
