Parents accused of having 'no shame' after controversial Easter egg hunt

Parents have been divided over a neighbourhood Easter egg hunt because of its controversial start time, with one woman questioning whether the organisers had “no shame”. Easter Sunday is an annual calendar highlight for many people and though it is an important religious festival and event in Christianity, which commemorates Jesus Christ rising from the dead, it has transcended this and been accepted in mainstream culture . Many people who aren’t Christians also celebrate Easter and the beloved Easter egg hunt is a firm favourite for lots of families, regardless of their beliefs. Typically, small chocolate eggs are hidden around the home or outside, which children then try and find. There’s often a prize for the person who tracks down the most eggs. One woman took to Mumsnet’s Am I Being Unreasonable (AIBU) forum where she posted under a name inspired by Tim Burton’s film adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s book, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland; Alice Absolum. In a post titled “Easter egg hunt at 6.30am”, “Alice” said: “Both the parents outside with the kids, several kids running around screaming at 6.30am. Do people have no shame?” She added: “If it was me, I’d be feeling so guilty and anxious if I was outside with them for some reason. Do people not feel like that? Or ignore the emotion? Or maybe the children wanted to do it at 6.30am and they have no boundaries.” In the comments section, people were divided, with some of the belief that as Easter is once a year, Alice’s frustration wasn’t justified while others branded the parents “obnoxious” for starting the hunt so early. One Mumsnet user said: “I’m pretty sure it will only be once a year. But yes, they should keep it down.” Another said: “Yes 6.30am is inconsiderate. Unfortunately a lot of people are.” But a third said: “Can’t see myself getting worked up about this. Let them have their fun.” Alice replied: “Even if it woke you up?” A fourth said: “I think it’s fine. It’s a bit of fun for 5 mins for kids. It’s only once a year.” Another commented: “Oh my god this is so miserable! It’s once a year, for a few year max. Your kids are only little once, make some memories with them”. But many people disagreed with this line of thinking. One person said: “‘It’s only once a year’ is ridiculous. If people lack consideration for an Easter egg hunt they’ll lack consideration on other occasions. S****y and unnecessary.” Someone else said: “YANBU [you are not being unreasonable], I’m sat here waiting for my 5 year old to wake up and run in, his hunt is set up for first thing this morning indoors. Outside hunts should be later on at a reasonable time.” Another said: “Cue all the virtue-signalling early risers… Yes, highly inconsiderate. There's absolutely no need for an Easter egg hunt to be at 6.30 in the morning.” And another commented: “Obnoxious behaviour from the parents.” One person said: “I think that’s rude and selfish at any time of year. I used to keep my children at a considerate volume, inside the house until at least nine at weekends and even then if they started shouting or screaming in the garden I'd tell them to come in. “Remind them not everyone is awake. The parents could have easily put a film on, or had an inside egg hunt.” And another added: “Absolute a***holes. Who on earth thinks that’s okay”. At the time of writing, 73% of Mumsnet users voted Alice was not being unreasonable with her complaints about the early morning Easter egg hunt.
