David Jensen / Getty Images Share articleCHARLOTTE, N.C. — Carolina Panthers defensive tackle Tershawn Wharton will begin training camp on the physically unable to perform list after undergoing neck surgery this month, multiple league sources confirmed to The Athletic. Wharton’s timeline to return is uncertain, although the Panthers expect him to play at some point during the 2026 season, one of the sources said. Wharton reported discomfort in his neck after the Panthers’ offseason program started in April. The Panthers drafted Texas Tech defensive tackle Lee Hunter in the second round of the NFL Draft in April, and his role now will increase in importance. In addition to losing Wharton indefinitely, the Panthers released starting DL A’Shawn Robinson in a cap-cutting move in March. But the Panthers still have Derrick Brown, a Pro Bowler in 2024, to anchor the defensive interior, with Bobby Brown, Cam Jackson and LaBryan Ray also vying for spots in the rotation. The Panthers signed the 27-year-old Wharton to a three-year, $45 million contract in 2025 after the team lost out to the New England Patriots in its pursuit of free-agent defensive lineman Milton Williams. But injuries limited Wharton to nine games last season, and the former Kansas City Chiefs player finished with just 36 tackles and two sacks. Spot the pattern.
