By LAUREN ACTON-TAYLOR, US NEWS REPORTER Published: 21:23, 1 June 2026 | Updated: 21:23, 1 June 2026 New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani paid homage to Pride Month as he suggested that it would take 'far more than a month' to honor the LGBTQ+ community's contributions to the city.  As Pride Month began on Monday, Mayor Mamdani jumped on X to acknowledge the celebratory month dedicated to remembering queer history.  'It would take far more than a month to honor the contributions of queer and transgender New Yorkers,' his post began.  'From the Cercle Hermaphroditos in 1895, the first trans advocacy group in the United States, to the drag balls of the Harlem Renaissance, to the Stonewall uprising, to the Lesbian Herstory Archives, to ACT UP!, founded in 1987 as queer people fought for their lives while the Reagan administration looked away, New York City's history has long been shaped by queer and trans New Yorkers. 'To all our queer and trans neighbors: you deserve a City where you can afford to live safely, openly, and joyfully. Happy Pride, New York City.' The post saw a mixed reaction, with many noting Mamdani having been born in Uganda - which criminalized same-sex sexual activity. 'Your ideology commands you to murder them. You're using Taqiya to lure these people into a false sense of security before you slit their throats as you so desperately want to,' one user on X wrote.  'We Christians want to help them and save them from their mental illness. You want to murder them.' As Pride Month began on Monday, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani jumped on X to acknowledge the celebratory month dedicated to remembering queer history Pride Month is celebrated each year in the month of June in honor of the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan, which was a pivotal point in the Gay Liberation Movement 'They have been living in NYC for many years without much issue. NYC has been hip for a long time. Stop pandering so much. Your lips are going to permanently pucker,' another chimed in.  'And don't forget about queer and transgender people next time your visit your parents palatial compound in Uganda, or celebrate your wedding anniversary in style, where homosexuality is illegal, subject to severe penalties, life imprisonment, or even the death sentence.' 'You refused to march in the Israel Day parade because you don't like their government's politics, but you have no trouble with going to Uganda. A little hypocrisy is detected.' 'And the religion you practice, would kill them. Yeah, we know. Fraud,' a third declared.  'You’ll believe anything, won’t you? This is total BS. BTW, I’m gay. You belong to a vile and violent religion which wants to stone me,' another said.  Others took issue with Mamdani's lack of acknowledgment for Memorial Day.  'Mayor Mamdani, you had time for a long, glowing Pride Month history lesson going back to 1895… but zero words for Memorial Day or the American troops who actually fought and died for the freedoms you enjoy,' a user declared.  'Typical Democrat priorities: celebrating every identity month while the military and real history get ignored. Your selective virtue signaling is pathetic. Try honoring the people who made this country possible before pandering to the latest rainbow parade.' The post saw a mixed reaction, with many noting Mamdani having been born in Uganda - which criminalized same-sex sexual activity The first Pride march took place on June 28, 1970, on the one-year anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising - which saw patrons of the Stonewall Inn fight back against violent police officers who would routinely raid bars where gays and lesbians were known to gather 'How long would it take honor our fallen? You didn’t mention that on Memorial Day. How long would it take to honor our military? You didn’t mention that on Armed Forces Day. How long would it take to honor Veterans? You probably won’t mention that on Veterans Day. Just curious,' another wrote. However, others applauded the New York City Mayor for acknowledging how queer history has heavily influenced the city.  'Every New Yorker deserves to live safely and with dignity. Recognizing the contributions of different communities and preserving their history is part of what makes New York unique,' one user said.  'I agree it's important to acknowledge that the fight for progress is a long one, that isn't over. And honoring the legacy of those who paved the way is a great way to start Pride Month. Happy pride everyone, you all deserve sunshine,' another wrote.  A third comment read: 'MAGA spent more than a month telling us that NYers were voting for a mayor who would enact sharia law & throw gays off of roof tops & instead we get a mayor who values & celebrates our queer & transgender community. Mamdani continues to prove the haters wrong.'  Many leaders across the country posted on social media acknowledging the beginning of Pride Month.  'You are free to be who you are and love who you love without fear here in Pennsylvania,' Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro wrote on X. 'We will continue to rise above the hate and division we see too often across this country, and keep fighting to advance real freedom all across our Commonwealth. Happy Pride Month, Pennsylvania!' Oregon's Governor Tina Kotek wrote: 'This month, we celebrate the LGBTQ+ community and reaffirm our commitment to building a state where everyone can live openly, safely, and authentically.' Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez wrote: 'Happy Pride Month! Let us be encouraged and emboldened by the strength and resilience of the queer community. We will continue to walk with and for you in the fight for LGBTQIA+ rights in NY-14 and across the globe' Pride continues to serve as a month to uplift queer activism, remember those lost to the AIDS crisis or homophobic and transphobic violence, as well as celebrating queer history It is continued to be seen as vital for movements across the globe, particularly where homosexuality remains criminalized and met with oppression or hate New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez wrote: 'Happy Pride Month! Let us be encouraged and emboldened by the strength and resilience of the queer community. We will continue to walk with and for you in the fight for LGBTQIA+ rights in NY-14 and across the globe.' Chuck Schumer wished everyone a Happy Pride Month and said: 'I have spent decades fighting for the rights of LGBTQ Americans. This month, let’s enthusiastically celebrate all that they have contributed to New York and America.' Even some sports teams jumped in on the action.  'Baseball is for all. Happy Pride Month,' the Philadelphia Phillies wrote on X.  'Love is love. Happy Pride Month to our Hawks family,' the Atlanta Hawks posted.  The Philadelphia Eagles, the Atlanta Falcons, the Philadelphia Flyers, the Arizona Cardinals, the Minnesota Vikings, the Houston Texans and the Los Angeles Dodgers were also among the teams that wished the internet a 'Happy Pride Month.' As did US Soccer, which wrote: 'This month, we celebrate the LGBTQ+ community across U.S. Soccer and throughout the ecosystem of the game. We believe soccer is stronger when everyone feels seen, supported, and empowered to show up fully as themselves. Here’s to a month of celebration, connection and belonging.' Pride Month is celebrated each year in the month of June in honor of the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan, which was a pivotal point in the Gay Liberation Movement, according to the Library of Congress.  The first Pride march took place on June 28, 1970, on the one-year anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising - which saw patrons of the Stonewall Inn fight back against violent police officers who would routinely raid bars where gays and lesbians were known to gather.  Pride continues to serve as a month to uplift queer activism, remember those lost to the AIDS crisis or homophobic and transphobic violence, as well as celebrating queer history. It is continued to be seen as vital for movements across the globe, particularly where homosexuality remains criminalized and met with oppression or hate.
