Novak Djokovic has been the subject of boos during his second-round win at the French Open.

The Serbian battled past home favourite Valentin Royer 6-3, 6-2, 6-7 (7), 6-3 in a contest lasting three hours and 44 minutes.

The 39-year-old, seeded third, found himself at odds with spectators on Court Philippe Chatrier throughout the match.

Djokovic repeatedly showed his frustration with crowd noise during points and between serves.

The tension reached its peak when he saved a crucial break point in the fourth set, responding by placing his finger to his lips towards the supporters.

Speaking after his win, Djokovic said: "It's a very important victory.

"The conditions are difficult for players. I had chances in the third set and it was my fault because I was twice a break up.

"It's normal to have a few complications. I hope I won't play against any other French players.

"That's enough. I've played two matches, and I feel like I've played two weeks.

"When I had a match point in the tie-break, I was too passive, and he took advantage. It's very, very hot, but I'm happy to get through."

Royer, ranked 74th in the world, was seeking his maiden victory against a top-10 opponent and gave the crowd plenty to cheer about.

The Frenchman twice recovered from a break-down in the third set, levelling on both occasions before thrilling home supporters by claiming the tie-break despite facing a match point.

His resistance continued in the fourth set, where he saved three further match points, including one with a superb half-volley.

A single break of serve ultimately proved decisive for Djokovic, who extended his remarkable run of reaching the third round at Roland Garros to 21 consecutive years.

Djokovic's reward is a highly anticipated encounter with Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca, marking their first career meeting.

The 19-year-old booked his place in the third round with a remarkable comeback against fellow young player Dino Prizmic.

Fonseca dropped the opening two sets 3-6, 4-6 before mounting an extraordinary fightback, winning the final three sets 6-3, 6-1, 6-2.

The emotional victory left the Brazilian in tears on court.

Djokovic's triumph over Royer also extended his winning streak against French players to 30 matches, having beaten Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in the opening round whilst also conceding a set.
