No party to gain significant advantage in US Congress after midterm elections — expert

NEW YORK, August 23. /TASS/. Neither Republicans nor Democrats will gain a significant advantage in the US House of Representatives following the midterm elections in November, Professor of Political Science from the California Institute of Technology Rod Kiewiet told TASS. "The president’s party almost always loses seats in the Senate and the House in the midterms, so that is the baseline expectation," Kiewiet said in an interview with TASS. "The Democratic candidates for Senate in Maine and in Michigan are problematic, however, so they may have squandered their chances there. If so, the Republicans retain control of the Senate," the expert continued. "The House will be harder for the Republicans to hang on to. I’m pretty sure, though, that whichever party is in the majority after November will have a very slim majority," he noted. "As a consequence, no meaningful legislation is likely to emerge from the House over the next two years," Kiewiet concluded. The US midterm elections will be held on November 3. One-third of the Senate and the entire House of Representatives will be up for election. Both chambers of the US legislature are currently controlled by the Republican Party.
