Nine people injured in mass shooting near England's World Cup base in Kansas City

A mass shooting in Kansas City, Missouri, has left nine people wounded, occurring just four miles from where England will be stationed during the World Cup.

The incident took place on Troost Avenue in the early hours of Saturday morning, with police responding to reports of gunfire at approximately 4am local time.

Kansas City Police Department officers arrived at the scene to discover a large crowd dispersing following the shooting.

The location sits a short distance from both the training facility and hotel that the England squad will utilise throughout the tournament's group stages.

Three women were among those initially transported to hospital following the violence.

Authorities have confirmed that all nine victims sustained injuries that are not considered life-threatening, with the wounded adults receiving treatment at multiple hospitals across the city.

Kansas City Police Department captain Jake Becchina told The Athletic that three adult women were among those initially requiring hospital care.

The investigation remains active, with officers maintaining a presence in the area where the shooting occurred.

No arrests have been made in connection with the incident, and police have yet to identify any suspects.

The shooting happened just days before England's scheduled arrival in the city, where they will establish their base for the duration of the competition.

England's squad is currently completing their preparations in Palm Beach, Florida, having secured a 1-0 victory against New Zealand in Tampa on Saturday.

The Three Lions will take on Costa Rica at Orlando's Inter&Co Stadium on Wednesday before travelling to Kansas City on Saturday, June 13.

Once there, Thomas Tuchel's men will remain in the city for the remainder of the tournament, using Swope Soccer Village as their training ground.

The facility serves as home to Sporting KC's reserve team and academy, situated in the south-eastern part of the city.

England will not be alone in Kansas City, with World Cup holders Argentina and the Netherlands also establishing their tournament bases there.

Argentina will train at Sporting KC's primary facility, whilst the Dutch squad will use Kansas City Current's NWSL training ground.
