Nighttime habits that disproportionately raise blood pressure, according to a doctor

Sleep significantly affects blood pressure, with a natural dip occurring during the night.

Early menopause increases the risk of hypertension, especially in women under 40.

Reducing evening alcohol consumption is a key strategy for maintaining healthy blood pressure.

Most people underestimate just how significantly sleep affects their blood pressure, according to a leading physician.

Medical Education lead at Medichecks, Dr Daniel Grant, told GB News: "It's a much bigger factor than most people realise. Blood pressure normally dips 10 to 20 per cent overnight while you sleep."

Insufficient or disrupted rest prevents this natural nocturnal drop, he explained.

"Poor or short sleep stops that dip happening, keeping the body in a more 'alert' state with higher heart rate and tighter blood vessels," Dr Grant said.

BLOOD PRESSURE

"People fixate on diet and exercise but rarely link a bad night's sleep to their blood pressure numbers."

The warning comes as new research has also highlighted a concerning link between early menopause and raised blood pressure.

Evidence now suggests that women who experience menopause before the age of 40 face a greater risk of hypertension than those who go through it naturally after 45.

The danger appears most pronounced for younger women, with those aged between 25 and 35 showing the highest vulnerability.

Medical professionals are urging people to focus on the factors within their control that could alter the trajectory of the condition.

These range from dietary choices to sleeping patterns — everyday habits that many would not immediately associate with cardiovascular risk.

Dr Grant identified one change above all others as the best starting point. "Cutting back on evening alcohol," he advised.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

"It raises blood pressure directly and also fragments sleep - it causes a rebound effect in the second half of the night, blocks REM sleep and makes you have to pee more, so it hits from several directions at once rather than one."

He noted that reducing alcohol in the evening is typically far more achievable than overhauling one's entire diet or shifting bedtime routines.

"Cutting out alcohol is also one of the best things you can do in general for your health optimisation," Dr Grant added.

The reason these evening behaviours carry such outsized consequences comes down to the body's internal clock, Dr Grant explained.

"The body's blood pressure rhythm is set to wind down overnight. Habits like alcohol, a salty meal, or stress late in the day interfere with that wind down and then go unbuffered for seven to eight hours of sleep," he said.

MAN CHECKING ALARM CLOCK

In other words, disruptions introduced earlier in the day can be counteracted by movement and activity, but those occurring just before bed persist unchecked throughout the night.

It is a mechanism that makes what happens in the final hours before sleep disproportionately important for long-term cardiovascular health.
