The NHS explains that symptoms can emerge gradually, creating a perfect storm for potential red flags to be missed. The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland situated near the windpipe in our necks.‌It generates hormones that control vital bodily functions including heart rate and body temperature. Furthermore, it influences metabolism. The thyroid manufactures the hormones triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4), and cancer of the gland can trigger an overproduction or underproduction of these hormones, potentially inflicting serious harm to the body.‌Thyroid cancer can strike anyone but is especially common among women, who are 10 times more likely to receive a diagnosis than men.
