The NHS has raised alarm over worryingly low participation rates in bowel cancer screening among Britons in their fifties.

Fresh data reveals a striking disparity between age groups, with merely 56 per cent of 54-year-olds returning their home testing kits compared to nearly 74 per cent of those aged 74.

The health service distributes free faecal immunochemical tests to all individuals between 50 and 74 years old every two years, requiring only a small stool sample that can be posted back at no cost.

Overall participation has also declined this year, dropping to 65.2 per cent from 67.6 per cent in the preceding twelve months.

BOWEL PAIN

Despite the concerning uptake figures, the screening programme continues to demonstrate its value in detecting the disease early.

Between April 2024 and March 2025, the initiative identified an average of 100 cancer cases weekly, with approximately 5.2 million people participating overall.

The NHS dispatches roughly 8.7 million testing kits annually to homes across the country.

Professor Peter Johnson, NHS national clinical director for cancer, offered a memorable prompt for those who might be putting off their test.

"So if you remember Scott and Charlene's iconic Neighbours wedding, it's probably your time to do a test," he said.

"Bowel cancer can develop without any symptoms, but catching it early saves lives."

Joanne Vernon from Wigan exemplifies precisely why completing the screening matters.

The 56-year-old received her kit two years ago and returned it within a fortnight, despite experiencing no symptoms whatsoever.

"I had no symptoms when I received my test. Not one. So I was really shocked when the results came back," she said.

Following further investigations, doctors diagnosed her with early-stage bowel cancer, and she underwent surgery in July 2024.

"I'm just glad I did the kit. I don't know what would have happened if I hadn't. It doesn't bear thinking about," Ms Vernon added.

She now encourages others her age to complete their tests promptly.

Leading cancer charities have echoed the NHS's call for greater participation.

Genevieve Edwards, chief executive of Bowel Cancer UK, said: "Every completed kit is an opportunity to detect bowel cancer early or even prevent it altogether."

BOWEL CANCER CHECK

She urged people not to delay, noting the test takes just minutes at home yet could prove transformative.

Cancer Research UK's chief executive Michelle Mitchell compared the process to brewing a cup of tea in terms of time required.

"We know catching cancer earlier boosts people's chances of survival, and it's concerning that fewer people in their 50s are taking up the chance to do these quick and easy at-home tests in England," she said.
