Murdock is the 51st Mr. Irrelevant, a title given to the final pick in each year’s draft. Murdock, 22, was a two-and-a-half-year starter for the Bulls. He holds the FBS record for forced fumbles with 17, and was a two-time first-team All-MAC player. The Athletic’s Dane Brugler ranked Murdock as the 12th-best linebacker in the class and gave him a fourth- to fifth-round grade entering the draft. “I feel extremely grateful and excited to help the Broncos win, above all else,” said Murdock, who forced an FBS-record 17 fumbles during his career at Buffalo. “I know a little bit about Mr. Irrelevant, but the main thing is I got an opportunity, and I’m trying to make the most of it to help us win.” Murdock said the thought crossed his mind that he would go undrafted. “I was trying to keep my mind off things I can’t control,” he said. “When I got that call, I was extremely grateful.” The Mr. Irrelevant tradition dates to 1976, when former receiver Paul Salata founded “Irrelevant Week.” The last pick is honored with a week of festivities, including a trip to Disneyland, a golf tournament, a regatta, a roast and a ceremony awarding him the Lowsman Trophy, which mimics the Heisman Trophy but with a player fumbling a football. Last year, the New England Patriots selected Memphis defensive back Kobee Minor with the Mr. Irrelevant pick. Minor started the season on the practice squad, but was elevated to the active roster for four games. He recorded one tackle in the Patriots’ 42-10 win against the New York Jets on Dec. 28, 2025. Murdock may be Mr. Irrelevant, but he has a chance to compete for a rotational spot at linebacker behind veteran starters Alex Singleton and Justin Strnad. The Broncos in 2025 had two undrafted players — Karene Reid and Jordan Turner — see snaps at inside linebacker. Murdock is slightly undersized at 6-foot-1 and 232 pounds, but he had eye-popping production at Buffalo. In his final two college seasons, Murdock made 298 tackles, including 30 for loss, and he added seven sacks. — Kosmider Murdock is the second Mr. Irrelevant selection by the Broncos in team history. The first was Ole Miss quarterback Chad Kelly in 2017. Kelly, the nephew of Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly, spent four seasons in the NFL with the Indianapolis Colts and Broncos, but he only played in one game.
